View Full Version : The PWC Pages
Many of you may have have some personal watercraft in your arsenal and I would like to start this thread up again.....
Soon have information on gatherings , race events, poker runs, how to section and modifications.....
Shade Tree does a lot of PWC work and the season is close upon us again....
Tips, Tricks and pics for PWC can be posted here in this thread....
A majority of the riding I(a few other junkies too) do is in the surf with very little flat water stuff....
If a boat can be abused or broken we have figured a lot of stuff out through our experiences.....
Good crowd out on the water and always fun......
If your hiding one behind the house or in the garage let it be known.......
See you on th water.....
A little taste of what's on the water off the coast !!!!!!

I am officially posting this so DK doesn't gain the record for the most consecutive posts in a topic with zero replies :starwars:

Yes there is surf on the East Coast, you just have to know where to look and when........

Clean Your Carb this Spring or your Engines going to ping !!!!!!!
Damage caused from detonation on 2 cycle engine.....
Fuel to air ratio is too lean, dirty carbs will not pass enough fuel to burn proper mixture in combustion chamber and leads to significant engine damage if not caught or repaired soon enough ......
If the PWC/Jet Ski has been sitting around for a while (Last Summer) you want to have a professional test ride your machine and read the spark plugs to determine if your machine is in a proper state of tune....
If test ridden by a knowledgeable technician they can then determine if repairs are needed without making unnescessary repairs..... Carb Cleaning can run any where between $220.00 Labor - $300.00 labor plus parts.....
Parts for twin cylinder 2 stroke = $160.00 (If Needed)
Parts for triple cylinder 2 stroke = $240.00 (If Needed)
Replacement of engine if carbs are dirty or not functioning properly......
Twin Cylinder engine $840.00 with shipping and gaskets
Triple Cylinder engine $1340.00 with shipping and gaskets
Installation cost depends on who you use ......
Installs will go anywhere from $420.00 for twins and $720.00 on triples.....
Be kind to your monetary resources this year, get your machine a check up before you spend way more than you would have to for something that could be prevented.......
This is what pre ignition or incorrect ignition timing will look like .....
Many triple cylinder watercraft will end up looking like this as they are ridden hard over a few seasons......
2 cycle crankshaft assemblies are made by press fitting a number of pieces together.....
These multi piece crankshafts are necessary in two cycle engines as they are not run on oil pressure like most plain bearing 4 stroke engines..... Some 4 stroke machines use multi part crankshafts also but not many in modern times with the exception of single cylinder machines..... 2 stroke engines are only provided oil through a small drip/vacuum style oil pump..... Many 2 stroke engines are fueled with a mixture of Gas and oil to provide lubrication of the engine through the carbs..... The size of the jet(passage way for fuel) is the determining factor in how much lubrication the engine will receive.....
These pre-mix oils are intended to burn off when mixed with gasoline and are not like your 4 stroke oils....... Many now are ashless style oils and each manufacture of watercraft has their own recommended type of oil....
(Read your manufactures specific requirements before you dump any wal-mart outboard oil in your PWC. If you own a sea doo, and you don't want to rebuild engines every other season read hard into what they require and understand they have a monopoly on what can be used in your machine if not modified to run on pre mix.)
The picture here depicts pre-ignition from poor ignition timing during combustion..... Many triple cylinder PWC will twist their crankshafts when loaded and abruptly unloaded during quick bursts of acceleration or skipping through the water...... Wave jumping on a triple cylinder engine is not recommended ...... Just about all OEM built triple cylinder crankshaft assemblies are only pressed together and not welded at their crank pins....
When not welded the crankshaft weights will begin to rotate on the crank pin causing the crankshaft to run out of round(causing vibration) or disturbing the position of the crank web to cause the piston to be mis timed
in the engines firing sequence leading to piston failure if not catastrophic engine failure......
Many believed for years that the rear cylinder simply ran hotter when run hard for sustained periods...... There is some research to disprove that theory, but I could not say in the case of every make and model triple cylinder machine.....
(On occasion if the engine were to experience a severe backfire this can cause the flywheel key to shear disturbing the position of the flywheel on the crankshaft which will lead to the incorrect ignition timing causing detonation or pre ignition) <------Many techs lose out to this one....
This picture depicts a twin cylinder engine...... It can happen to twins, just as as much as I see it with the triple cylinder PWC's.......
If you want to save some face with your significant other this season and you want to have one of the fastest boat on the water buy a brand new PWC....... If you are looking to save a few bucks and have found a great deal on that triple cylinder water rocket, have it inspected by a professional
and find out how many "real" engine hours are on it...... Buy a machine no more than 2-4 years old...... Anything older may be half the price of a new one but the first major repair bill for your triple cylinder water rocket will easily cost you 1/2 - 2/3's your purchase price...... Putting you close enough to what your buddy spent on his brand new machine, who will most likely be enjoying his toy while all of your local PWC dealer/ PWC repair facilities are backed up for 3-5 weeks performing the repair you desire for other PWC enthusiasts.....
