View Full Version : Adjusting Valves / Synching Throttle Bodies

I'm reading my service manual and sizing up these two jobs. First, does anyone know where I can get the pads and if I need anything special to adjust the valves besides the feeler guage or whatever that thing is that measures the clearance. I imagine Shadetree or the dealership? Also does anyone have the synch tool (digital one) for the throttle bodies? Maybe let me borrow it for a case of beer or something? I know how to synch them using the ECU but I prefer to do it the mechanical way. It doesn't seem like to tough of a job and I'm pretty familiar with my bike Also if anyone wants to help out, I'll provide some beer and throw somethin on the grill. Words of wisdom?

Valve adjustment, eh? Which bike, year? How many miles? The cam(s) will have to come out if you actually have to adjust the valves, if it's a shim-over-bucket design; that and you'll have to hope that the dealer has the exact shims that you need once you get the clearance measurements.
As for the TB sync, it's usually pretty easy, and can be done with a regular mercury carb sync tool in under 30 minutes; as far as I know there are no electronic means of adjusting this, since vacuum is physically adjusted by turning a screw on each TB. DK used to have a tool, not sure if he still does. I have a brand new one that I've been meaning to leave at his shop anyways.

03 R6 FI about 17k miles. So I should take the cams out and check all the clearances and THEN go to the dealer and get the pads/shims I need? I would think there would be a little kit with different size pads in it that I could buy prior to starting the job that should cover anything I'd encounter. no? As for the TB synch. I was referring to a Morgan carbtuner. www.carbtune.com Seems like it would speed things up greatly and I dont even have to take the airbox off to get in there and hook this up. just the seat and lift the tank. It seems like it'd be worth it for a couple of people to go in on the tool. A guy I know in Cali says it takes him like 10 minutes with that thing from start to finish. Think it's worth it?

first you would need to check the clearances before removing the cams if they are within specs there would be no need to go any further
17K on an 03 - I'd be willing to bet some money that all your valves are still within spec, and they won't need adjusting until the next cycle (32K?). The clearance has to be checked with little but the valve cover off, but if your bike uses s-o-b, the cams will have to come out for you to get to the shims. You can buy a complete kit, but... it's $$$.
The carbtune is nice, of course, but only marginally faster (and arguable no better, and by the looks of it, less accurate) than a tool nearly 1/3 its cost. The main benefits are that it's smaller and portable, whereas the other tool is several times longer, and mercury can be messy (not to mention lethal if you really screw up).

done with the valves. The exhaust valves are right on the minimum allowable clearance. I dont know where they started out at so I can't really say when I'll actually need to adjust them. I really should just go ahead and do them now. More clearance is more power. I will probably wait another few thousand miles though since the track day is coming up and I need to get it back together and get working on the suspension. BTW thanks mike for the link i'm making my own manometer with the materials from lowes. Seems way more accurate.

alright well i'm done with the whole thing. HOLY TITS, the TBs were screwed... a mercury guage BLOWS compared to the manometer I made using two stroke oil. compared the two and the home made one was WAAAYYY more accurate. I forgot my bike ran this good. I got a HOW TO going on R6messagenet with some pics and everything. This cost me less than 10 bucks to make and is balls on accurate. Awesome, thanks again mike, i took that one that guy made and modified it a bit and damn... WOW is all I can say.

Was doing some searching...thought I'd resurrect an old thread.
I'm at 15k on the 750 and it's due for a valve job & TB sync. Is the dealership the best source for shims? I've heard stories of shops not having shims in stock so I was just wondering if there's a better place to find/order them.

I know KWS has a mess load of shims around. Kenny (ECPS) could probably do the work as well. Give him a call.

take it to kws..............they can do that thing blind folded and it is only a couple of hundred bucks

i would say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. its probably not even going to be off, but if you attempt to do it, its easy to get in over your head and REALLY get them out of sync...
