View Full Version : New Tires for heavier Sport bike

Does anyone have any thoughts on a tire for a heavier sport bike? I ride a honda blackbird. I need a new rear and want to change out both soon. Thinking about the Michilen Powers/Road but not sure, maybe the Avon storm. Any opinions on tires or a good place in Charleston area to purchase them?
Rusty
I've been very, very happy with Avon 45/46's on my FJR, and have no doubt that their replacement models (Storm, I think) are even better.
The combination of Power front, and Road rear worked well, although the front wore out faster than the rear, and I had to change both tires at something like 8,000 miles.

what kind of riding do you do? how much milage are you looking for?
what are you looking for? (something sticky, something for commuting, something inbetween... ect)

right now my job has me tied up but I plan increasing my riding soon. I've got other transportation so hopefully not to much rain riding. Just regular around town and riding with the corner junkies hopefully. I guess more of just a "something in the middle" style. Any ideas Dude.....

WEll I do not ride a heavy bike. I ride an R6 and use sport touring tires on it since I ride everyday. In the past I have use 2 set of the Michilen Powers/Road. I have been able to haul azz on the straights and use the entire tire leaning over in the curves at high speeds. I have never had a problem with them. And from what I remember I got around 15,000 or more miles out of each set with no belt/threads showing. I have also used the DUNLOP and the PIRELLI sport touring tire and have had no problem with those. Great for rain rides too.

well, ive only had 3 types of tires on my bikes....
my hawk has seen alot of Metzeler/dunlops
my other bikes had middle ground OEM or equivalent tires.. think Dunlop sportmax...
im now running takeoff race scuffs from barry(SUM650 on here).. they're Dragon Supercosa Pros....
its possibly one of the best mods ive ever done to the bike. they are insanely sticky... but i can practically see the wear going on them. lol.
up till this point, i always thought the sportmax/qualifier or other middle ground tire was close enough... i worried about both milage and rain traction..
but ive ridden these in the rain (hell, they race in the rain with them) and they seem to stick better in the rain then my old dunlops...
so that leaves the only con to these being the mileage... but i started thinking.. about every 3-5k i have a habit of picking up a screw in the rear tire.. in the 12 sets or so ive gone thru on this bike, only about 2 have gone for the life of the tire without a plug or something of that nature.
so my opinion has very recently changed to "i would run the stickiest rubber possible..."
that said.. i cant really advise you on what brand/model tires... like i said, the only really sticky tires ive ever run are these.. previous to that, it was just alot of dunlop sportmax tires... they're not as sticky, and dont feel as secure in the rain... but up until i tried these, i thought they were the best tires i could run for the type of riding i do (that is, ALOT of street riding)
all i can say is, if you're not commuting with it, go get the stickiest ones you can find. lol.
btw, i dont understand this "they never warmup on the street" info they say online... for two reasons.... one.. the tire dead cold going down my street has more traction then my old dunlop.... and two, by the time i leave my neighborhood, the tire is warm.. not hot, but warm... i know this because i forgot to check my pressure one morning, and i pulled over to check it... i was surprised how warm and soft the tire was, even though i havent even gone 2 miles yet...

[quote="Sweetruss"][quote=MrDude_1]like i said, ...
that's some good feed back and thank you (Mike, burns, Mr.Dude). I know Barry is out of town for a few weeks and I've got some wear showing on the back, so I'm going to change them, hopefully, this weekend. If I go with the Powers/Road, does anyone have a good place t purchase them?

Cycle Gear should have a good deal for them, I have no idea if they would have them in stock.

I've run the Conti Road Attacks and got decent mileage from them. I'm running Dunlop Qualifiers now, and will spoon on some Pirelli Diablo Supersports in a couple months when I'm done chewin' up the Dunnies.
I ride a ZRX, which weighs about 540 lbs wet. I'm also heavy myself (250), and a bit heavy handed on the throttle. I typically chew up a rear in about 4000 miles, and a front in about 6000 miles on the street.
The Conti's stick better in the rain and cold, compared to the Dunlops, but they have to be pushed hard to lean very hard. The Dunlop Qualifiers are very neutral for cornering, but if you drop the tire pressure a couple pounds, they want to turn very quickly. I cannot comment on the Pirelli's as I haven't run them yet.
My bike came with Bridgestone 020's, which are reported to last up to 10,000 miles. I chewed up a rear in 4000 miles, and the front tire tread cupped to the point of weird handling long before the rear gave up. The 020's are unpredictable = front end sliding kinda sucks. We get enough of that around here with all the sand on the roads.
A lot of ZRXOA members swear by the Avons. Good mileage and great handling. I haven't tried them yet - I buy cheap tires (no more than $200 a set new for a reputable brand and type), and I have not seen Avon's at that price.

I think I'm going to buy my tires today at lunch, or at least a new rear and I might get a new helmet (I don't like mine). I'm stuck between the Metzler M3 or the Michelins 2ct for a rear tire. Any suggestions from the crowd?

Yeah, I forgot to mention that the Avon rear lasts me over 10K, and the front over 15K :smilebig:

which is really surprising, considering you don't exactly just 'cruise' on the fjr...

Patrick, do you carry the "eve" helmet (ladies helmet with the purple flowers on it)? If so, do you stock the med. I'm going to buy my wife that one and myself a new one. I hate my helmet. too much wind noise.
