I seem to have acquired a nice noisy ticking today on my way to lunch. It is pretty damn loud and follows the rpm's (speed of tick increases with rpm).
not wanting to ride it anymore I cancelled lunch and now am hungry and pissed.
The bike is probably 10,000 miles overdue for a valve job. I know you havent heard it or seen the internals but does this sound like a good guess as to what is wrong. After it happened the motor runs just like it always does, does not smoke, stumble or anything. just a loud ass tick.
any help is greatly appreciated.
patrick (um-bop)
loud could be a valve. however the zx's often wear our there cam chain tensioner, thus allowing the cam chain to tap the side of the cases.

cam chain tensioner, cheap, easy fix. go see the guys at velocity for the part.

cool well i can go get the part but im pretty sure this is not something I can do by myself. my mustang is one thing but i dont even like going down to the carbs on this for fear of FUBAR!!!!
where should I go to get it put on and bout how many labor hours am i lookin at??
cam chain tensioner is cake. also go ahead and order the O-ring. schnits racing has them or hardracing.com

is it possible to goof the timing by replacing this tensioner? im going to try to do as little as possible to f*** things up but it should be a pretty open and shut case right?
thanks guys
no... however you dont want to put the heat to the wrench. snug the tensioner down then back off 1/2 turn and turn the lock nut down.

unfortunatly neither of those sites has it for my bike. i saw one for an 02 ZX-6r which should work but I dont really wanna risk it. I was going to do the manual cam chain tensioner cause that is what I hear everyone gets and it eliminates problems from there on out.
do yall know another site that i can get one from?

Stay offline, go to your local dealer, should have it in stock and not very expensive. :wtg:

pat... it looks intimidating, but its not beyond your mechanical ability.. lol.
as for where to get the part... just snag the part number and order it online.. thats what i do for all my parts (afterall.. thats what every shop around here has to do for my parts anyway)

aight cool. i just found the tensioner at an online site for $67 and the oring and bolts. im gonna get the whole shabang. better safe than sorry. does this sound reasonable or is it rape?

you should call burns to see if any of the manual tensioners that they have will work, manual tensioners are the way to go
MrDude_1
08-24-2007, 03:16 PM
i never bought that particular tensioner before, but that price isnt suprising or anything...
take the tensioner part number, and google it with the word "forum"... then you can read what people bitched about online and get an idea.. or just search the part number and do some "shopping around" if you want to know for sure.
really, if it was me, id just order it, because its friday, and if you dont order it soon, you'll go two weekend without riding.

get a manual one from KWS & don't mess with a stock piece of crap. also if it does have 10k on the ticker you might want to adj. the valves. the the tapping might also be the cam slapping on the valve shim bucket or the tolerance being to tight!!!!! but the tensioner is always a good idea regaurdless
dont forget the 0-ring!!! why do people order parts and no gaskets????? $400 part screw the gasket! i dont have $5!!!! lol

08-25-2007, 10:07 AM

If you can't find a way Patrick, I work downtown and keep a trailer here at work. I could come by your work and we could take it to Randy's. It's not a bike trailer, just a regular trailer with short sides and the tailgate that folds down. It should work.

What up, Hanson?
i did that for you kat.
i have ordered a manual one for the 98-02 ZX-6R since they do not currently make one for the ZZR. i was kinda disappointed but hey shit happens.
i ordered that since those bikes are the most alike. wish me luck that it works. its a valve job right after this and hopefully i will be good to go.
thank you russ for the offer of the trailer. i really do appreciate it. im just gonna wait for the part to get here and pop it in at work on my lunch hour. I have been driving my dads 95 honda accord around for the last week since the bike went down and even though I have been daily riding that bike for 2 years and sometimes get sick of it, a little piece of me has died not riding. i got the itch so damn bad its not funny. i get mad at other riders if i see them riding down rivers im gettin so jealous. its not good at all lol.
ill keep yall informed on progress.

well i didnt wait and wanted to get the bike home instead of storing it at the place that I work that I put my 2 weeks in today. I decided that i would try to get the bike home. BAD IDEA!!! the 1st 10 minutes was fine. I was watching myself tryin not to do anything stupid and just get home as quick as possible. I get about 5 mins. from the house and the bike starts bucking and running really nasty. has a little miss. and no power.
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE CAM TIMING OUT AND IF SO DOES THAT MEAN I AM F****** WITH A CAPITAL F!!!
sweetruss I guess I should have taken you up on that trailer. im sure ill be paying for this mistake!!
patrick
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
see you soon... still in tampa....shit.

Patrick I still keep the trailer here at work so just let me know if you need some help. If you need to take it somewhere or need to haul it, it's still available (except for tonight, i got dinner plans with the old lady). If you are going to take it to have it looked at I can certainly due my best to help you get it there.

It might be a long shot, but any chance you might have foul plugs or was the bucking really hard? The tensioners usually hold on from the point when they start making noise for a fair amount of time. At least on my type of bike, the tensioner is a common problem and other riders have put another 5000 miles on them before changing them (I would not recommend it).

Yeah...... Sounds worse than just a tensioner. You should get that thinhg to a shop....... A Real one.

well im pretty decent at cars and breakdown and i know this is a whole new world but im going to dive in it this weekend. i am going to get the motor broken down and the head off to check for bent valves/holy pistons.
i mean hell whats the worst that can happen? lol this sucks.
russ thanks so much for the offer and if it is bad I might be giving you a call for that trailer. i will def. shoot you some gas money if it comes down to needing it.
wish me luck yall

Don't even think twice about it Patrick, I'll pm you my number. I work downtown so there's no problems. Good Luck.
r.
dude just let me get home..i live close ill be there soon.
Patrick,
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU .......
:evillaugh: MUHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Just remove left hand side cover ..... Rotate engine over to timing mark indicated on trigger wheel..... Use a leak down tester to check each cylinder...
Doubtful you have bent valves..... Check each cylinder to insure this.....
(you'll need 10mm spark plug adapter for leak down tester).....
If compression tests good, proceed with the following.....
Drain oil into completely sanitary oil drain pain and inspect for material....
Also not a bad idea to cut the oil filter open and check for more material....
Remove valve cover, remove cams, inspect cam chain sliders.....
If cam chain sliders are worn, you will want to drop oil pan and remove particles from pan and from oil pump pick up screen.....
Cam chain slider material can block off oil passages and cause damage to cam towers, rendering the cylinder head useless even if the bike has good compression......
Replace cam chain, sliders and tensioner if there is severe wear on the cam chain sliders.....
All of this can be done without removing engine...... Easier if you do drop the engine, but it would be a waste of time.....
Good luck!

hahaha thanks dk. this is really killing me. hopefully we will find out that it is not worst case scenario.
Am I correct in assuming that bike motors are interference motors? I would think that with the rpms these bikes pull and the labor that the motors endure the bikes would be non-interference and the manufacturers would put pistons in with reliefs but hey what do i know.
thanks for all yalls input and I will keep you posted as to how f'ed everything is. hopefully i will see you at the tree sometime this century!
aaron carter out!!
