Apparently, it's not uncommon for stuff (water, coolant, oil, whatever) to collect in the bellypan, especially on race bodywork, so whatever's in there might come out onto the rear tire, and give you one very nasty surprise...
Check out this pic. Water is pouring out of the pan, straight onto the rear tire. The rider in the pic highsided shortly thereafter, thinking that he had a dry track, warm tires, etc. He made out ok, and the damage to the bike was minimal, but it could've easily been much worse.
