View Full Version : Deals Gap Trip April 15-17
I have proposed a a date of 15-17 April to take on the mighty Dragon.
Let's get this thread rolling to determine meetup information if we choose to form a convoy from here to there. Those who have never heard of the Gap really need to check out this website. www.tailofthedragon.com
318 monstrous mountail curves in 11 miles plus a lot more twisties.
Input Please!! I look forward to seeing a bunch of you out there.
Later,
JMan
EDIT: Poll added by Mike 3/25/05 at 11AM
Ride out, or trailer? What about accomodations? I've had good luck with http://www.phillipsmotelonline.com/.
Personally, I won't be able to make it out until either that Friday evening, or Saturday morning, but I'm all for a little excursion. I didn't make it out to the Gap once in 04 :wall:
I'm putting this on the calendar...
It's about a 5 hour drive from Charleston to there. So we all need to make arrangements in either trucking or trailering our bikes there.
Accomodations: Motels, Gap Cabins, camping in trucks, trailers, or tents.
Prices aren't too bad. It helps to split the costs a few ways if you can.
Visit www.dealsgap.com for reservation information.
A few nearby locations for lodging would include:
Tapoco, NC
Fontana Village, NC
Robinsville, NC
Bryson City, NC

Thanks Jason for posting the info. I just booked myself and Steve at the Deals gap hotel and campground. If you want to stay there I highly recommend you do it today. The guy at the hotel said that he only had a couple of rooms left. Remember you can campout there as well if you like. I think it's onlyWe are going to have a good time for sure. This being the first gap trip of the year to. For all of the guy's racing, we made sure that it's not on a race weekend to. So no excuses. I expect to see Champion Yamaha folks there as well. Plan early and lets do it.
So if you are going, please lets have a show of hands. Reply back with your first name. We need to start doing a head count and see who needs a trailer ride, etc. Here's the deals gap motel site page. Click on the reservations link to get the phone #. www.dealsgap.com/info.php
By the way, here's a pic of Jason latest bike mod.
We need to identify "Space Availability" for hauling the bikes there.
Truck owners and trailer owners, speak up! Some guys don't have the ability to haul their bikes there, but they might have CASH to offset your gas if you give 'em a lift to and fro.
Jason Truck/Trailer I'm already full. 1 bike in the bed and 2 in the trailer
Barry, Steve, etc.. Trucks/Trailers Space available for any bikes??
This is the place to speak up if your bike needs a ride or if you can carry someone.

I agree with Jason. If you want to go and you don't have a way to get your bike there, let us know. We can try to pair you with someone. Who hasn't made there reservations yet? I'll tell you from experience. Iit's better to make reservations and to cancel them if you decide not to go. Rather than waiting until the last minute, and then try to find a place to stay.

I am still undecided, kinda want to see how things play out around here for the heritage. If i go i have a freind in Knoxville i can crash at his place.. and throw my bike in the back of the PU.. Meet up with you at the gap.. the ride there from Knoxville is quite fun... If weather is bad though i will be there!!!
Hey Guys I'm there...just got the extended kitchen pass...lol... I do need a way to get my bike up there though. Either post it or get my phone # from J to help me figure out how to get my bike up there. I've got cash for gas of course. I plan on camping where ever J and Tink set up.... and who ever else wants to toss a few back. Cant wait to get the sticker on my ride.....if the dragon dont tame me first!!!!

Where's that SPCA phone number? That poor dog is being molested!
As far as transport... my SO probably won't be up for a ride all the way up, in which case I'll be taking my truck (1-2 bikes fit in the back, and towing someone's trailer won't be a problem), or we'll be hitching a ride with someone else. The truck seats five comfortably...
We have space but , who's got the hp/torque ?
12' Pace ?
16' Open Feather Light?
16' Enclosed feather light ?
28' Storm Enclosed?
I'll have to check it out with the "Power That Is" to gain access to the "Shade Tree beast"...
"Shade Tree Beast is more than capable of doing Chucktown to The Gap in 4 hour(with 18,000lb load)"

Let me know how many people RSVP and we'll see what we can do to ....

Yeah Todd I will hook you up. Just tell me what color and size. I owe you that atleast.
Note to Todd: Don't try to keep up with guy riding wheelie down Interstate. The cops can pull two people over at once.
How many points was that on your driving record and what was the ticket $?
Interstate scares me bad enough not to risk trouble or danger other than the occasional "Oh crap, I need to hurry up and get home or my wife is going to kill me" act. But nothing too unrealistic(though cops would think I probably need to sit in a cell for a bit.
I bet you keep that front tire down on the interstate now, huh Keith?

Quoting a PM from JMan, with bolding and coloring added for emphasis...
We need to start a poll to determine where and what time everyone wants to meetup that Friday if they want to drive with the gravy train to the Gap. This would probably be best if if was a resturant large enough to park several trucks with trailers in it to grab a bite to eat and do a last minute secure check tie down.
What time to meetup. Granted not everyone will be able to make it and will have to venture there alone, but the majority will rule.
Any ideas on places? I think the vote times should be 4PM, 5PM, 5:30PM. Because it's a 5 hour drive, don't want to wait too late for anyone to be falling asleep behind the wheel getting there.
There's a McDonald's off of I26 a little ways past all the Summerville/Goose Creek exits that is a big truck stop. I think a place like this would be most appropriate for the kind of group we'll have. Everyone that shows up should be ready to grab a bite, mingle for a few, gas up, last check, and roll out.
I put up a poll just a few minutes ago, in this thread.
Some thoughts about the excursion, based on the premise that we're all responsible adults (and feel free to add to this, maybe making it a universal how-to/FAQ):
- someone (speak up please) who's been there, done that, and gotten the t-shirt should lead the caravan, and someone else who also knows the way should trail it (that is, be the last in line, to catch strays, alert the rest of us that someone's fallen out, etc)
- everyone should get printed maps, with major points (exits to take, signs to look for, etc) clearly marked
- let's meet at the chosen time, make quick checks, and roll out, all within 15 minutes; no BS, no "I gotta eat", no "I forgot my bike" etc; let's talk it all out here, not only will it keep us from wasting time later, it'll be on record and become part of our collective experience
- needless to say, but I'm going to say it anyways: show up at the meet point ready to go, or show up early enough to get gas/snacks at the meet point; no crying, stopping for gas, etc once we roll out
- those late in coming are welcome to pick up the pace until they catch up... staying within the posted speed limits of course
I'll add more later... kinda spent for the moment...
I, for one, don't know when I'll be able to leave, but the later on Friday, the better. 5PM and earlier is almost certainly out of the question for me, but 5:30, 6, etc should be doable.
Hope I didn't ruffle any feathers with this post

Hey, I'm off work so I can leave at anytime that afternoon. However, I would like to leave with the largest group. I suggest that we make a time to leave promptly at 6:00 from the Wal-Mart parking lot in Summerville, right off I-26 at exit 199. Then we can stop and eat in Columbia. ( Notice how I worked that eating in there!) Then we can all caravan behind Jason in that big HEMI. I know that he knows the way. Another good thing that Jason did the last time that we went is that he brought along his walkie talkies. These were great. So if you have any, bring them along to share with a buddie. Jman can I get dibbs on one of yours? If it is already spoken for, I will probably go out an buy a cheap set. Another thing is that we need to exchange cell phone #'s before we head out.

i'm jobless, so it doesn't matter to me what time i leave, but as barry said, i'd like to leave with the largest group. i have room for 1 other bike and 3 people to ride, so if anyone is interested, let me know. we can just split the gas. if nobody needs a ride, then i don't really want to drive up by myself, so i'll be looking for someone who has room for my bike. i'll be camping out at the crossroads (where barry and some others are staying), so if anyone else wants to camp, me, mike k, kenny, etc. have all camped there before (and at various race venues), so its not bad at all, and we had a lot of fun. one more thing...i need a 180/190 dunlop gp take-off if anybody has one. the one on my bike won't last the weekend, even at a modest pace. let me know, guys!! props on the site, mike k!!

Mac it's good you got on board. A bunch of us have been plugging this site since DK (Derrick) told me about it. I too thought that it would be good to get all of the Charleston rider’s at one central location to communicate. We are a group, weather we want to be or not. We owe it to ourselves and our families to keep our rides as safe as possible. I figured that this is a good way to start. I also thought that it would be good to plug another local boy's Motorcycle Shop. DK over at Shade Tree, in fact you may want to call him about a cheap tire for sale. Call me if you need his number. Or just send him a PM.

Hey guy’s I just wanted to give some pointers and tips to some of the people who are going to the gap for the first time.
First things first, please check and service your bike. This includes cleaning and adjusting the chain, replacing worn tires, fixing leaks, changing the oil, checking and tightening loose screws, checking tire pressure, etc. I know this sounds simple, but you won’t believe how many people who don’t do regular maintainence to there bikes. It really sucks to have to wait for someone who broke down because they didn’t take care of there bikes. It really ruins the day for everyone. If you need to have your bike serviced call DK over at Shade Tree.
The second thing on the list is to remember that US 129, better known as the dragon is a public hwy, not a race track. Believe me, I tell you this from first hand experience. There is no pride or prize for crashing your bike. This means that you need to ride under control and well within your abilities at all times. If you do something like cross the centerline of the road you could be dead. There could be a car, truck, RV, sports car, or another motorcycle coming around the corner. Stay on your side of the road period. Don’t try to keep up with other people, ride your own ride at a safe pace for you. Example: A safe pace for DK is not a safe pace for me. If you want to get some hard riding in, talk to Kenny over at Champion Yamaha in Mount Pleasant. There is going to be an open track day at Roebling Road in Savannah on Monday, 4-18-05. If you have never been on a road racing track before, this is a great opportunity for you to experience and ride on a track. There will be limited amount of people there, and there will be plenty of people there to show you the ropes from start to end. Riding on the track is safer that riding on the street. So don’t worry about crashing you beautiful bike. There is no pressure there to go fast or slow, you go at your own pace. You will not be the fastest person there, and you probably won’t be the slowest. So call Kenny and git ur done. I’ll see you all at Wild Wings on Wednesday.

just to add to what barry said, u.s. 129 (deal's gap) is a public road, and as many times as we stress it, people still do stupid sh*t like crossing the center line, passing in blind corners, or just riding above their ability. keep in mind: PEOPLE HAVE DIED ON THIS ROAD!! cruisers and sportbikes alike. as much fun as this road and all the surrounding roads are, they are no joke, AND THE DRAGON WILL BITE!! sorry to beat that dead horse, but when you first-timers see this road, you will understand. as a side note, because the riding conditions are much different than you've ever encountered in chucktown (i.e., turns and such...), tire pressure and suspension settings are of considerable importance. barry stressed bike maintenence, but i think that he, DK, and anyone else with marked riding experience will tell you that the stock tire pressure is to high. you could get a second/third opinion from any of them, but i would recommend about 32f/32r psi or 32f/30r psi for the duration of the weekend. the smart thing to do would be fill your tires a bit higher than that and then check the pressure AT THE GAP due to atmospheric changes. maybe it might seem like i'm overdoing it to some of you guys, but i'd rather be safe than sorry...as for suspension, most people will undoubtedly be running on stock suspensions, which is fine as long as they are adjusted properly. i would recommend going to sportrider.com and looking in the 'tech' section where they have suggested suspension settings. these settings are obtained from testing done by the magazine on completely stock bikes by seasoned racers, so they should do you fine for the weekend, with minor adjustments at most. once again these are just my suggestions, so feel free to get another opinion from someone with EXPERIENCE (not your buddy who just bought a brand new 1000 last week...). if you are unsure how to set up your suspension, i don't mind helping anyone, and i'm sure barry, charles, or DK can hook you up if you ask. see you all at ww tomorrow...

Hey Mike, thanks for sharing those pics with us. They came out great. For all you who didn't get to go, all I can say is that you really missed out on a great weekend. The weather was almost picture perfect. The dragon wasn't too crowded. The cops weren't all over the place, in fact on Sat. I only saw 2 cops all day. It was really a fun and safe weekend for everyone. Jason, thanks for coming up with the idea to put this together. Mike, and Derrick if it weren't for this great web site and forum we couldn't have made this work. So thanks to you guys as well.
I agree that this website kicks AZZZZ!!! I know I'm new to this group so who is who....mccutchu2 is Chris, I think SUM650 is Berry, I know Mike, ccs273...? railman...? I know Mac... I know Jman and smitty....Dmanizz...?Who else am I forgetting? The pictures at killboy.com are up and there are some good shots of us in there....yea I did get a keychain. Killboy said he would hook us up... he wrote....
$5 per shot. (highway robbery, I know ;) They are really big and suitable for poster prints up to 24x36 inches. Just get what you can and I usually throw in some extras.
Best Regards,
Darryl Cannon

Hey Todd, if you haven't met Darryl (killboy) he is a great guy and a excellent rider. I dont mind supporting him by buying a couple of pics from him. I like to see good people make it, and $5 or $10 isn't going to kill me. I'll see you on the Sunday ride.

Todd, thanks for the link. All the pics there are already nicely laid out, which is cool. Also, the ones I can access are pretty small, nowhere near their original size (what was that, a 5/6 MB camera?).
Here's the fixed link, pointing directly to the Gap album: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/tebfire77/album?.dir=be29&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/tebfire77/my_photos
Iam not sure what jasons camera is. I think its a 5.1 MP camera. Is there a way I can make the pics thier Original size incase the guys want any for prints? You can email me at tebfire77@yahoo.com so we wont fill up the forum so much. If anyone want the Orig just set up a yahoo messenger or AOL messenger account and I can zip you the whole file. It only takes like 3 minutes to set up. Heres the link to set it up. http://messenger.yahoo.com/ Just ass me to your friends list and Ill hook everyone up.
That add me to your friends list...hahaha!!!!
Ive been drinking some coronas.

Not sure what went wrong with the other FTP address, but here's another one to try. No passwords of login ID's, just drag the files into it:
ftp://h.eurotechie.com/io/
let me know if it worked.

Yep, that did it :wtg:
I'll have them added to the albums in a day or so.

Hey Clark and all or you Deal's gap first timers. What did you think about deals gap? Are you planning to make Deals Gap Trip#2 in June?
I dont even barely want to ride my bike in charleston anymore because of the Gap trip. Im not going to be able to make the next (2nd) trip. But when the guys get back from the sandbox in Aug/Sept time frame me and jason were talking about doing a big family kinda trip. Ride in the morning, ski/boat/raft in the noon and fininsh off with more riding of course. Theres so much to do around there we though the kids and wives would have a good time. We were thinking about getting a cabin(s) depending on the amount of people interested in attending. Needless to say I had one hell of a time on my first trip. Met a new cool group of friends and learned alot about my bike from you experienced riders. Thanks for inviting me. Gotta go do the daddy thing today so I can ride tommorrow at the tree....see you there if weather permits.
Railman = Clark....got it dude! Thanks...are you going to the tree this sunday with June (spelling?)
peeaccccceeee out!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Mike. I uploaded some pictures using eurotechie. If you want to add them to my contributions album that would be cool. I had a little fun with PhotoShop.
If anyone likes what I did with those photos and wants me to hook a few pictures up for them just send me the photos (large format) to tebfire77@yahoo.com

All of the pics looked very nice Todd. I really like the one that you photoshopped with the group. I'm thinking of getting a poster done of that one. Does anyone know of where the cheapest place in town to get this done?
I think Kinkos is reasonable place to get posters made. I'll make some calls later and post some prices and phone numbers. Thanks for the comments. By the way the GroupPic of all of us made the front page at www.tailsofthedragon.com Iwas pretty happy to see us on the front page...check it out...scroll to the bottom of the main page...hollaaa!!!
Schweeet!
By the way, DK has the following to say to the participants:
FREE rear tire change (includes mounting and balancing) at his shop, to anyone of our riders that participated in this weekend's ride :wtg:
