Don't you need a lot of vinegar for making pickles???That will be one stinky motor.

he manufacturers recommend filling the crankcase FULL OF OIL TO THE TOP OF THE FILL PLUG then i would spray fogging oil into the cylinders

Hey guys, ease on the spam, he's trying to ask DK a question. Stay on topic or take it to the off topic section.

Ken,

Are you looking for a semi stock engine to save the good one for GNF ?

The motors you have , one stock and one mod motor we sold you right ?

If you need more engines I have a few that are all in pieces waiting to get measured up. We could build you another if that is what you want.

What exactly is the question.

The mod motor should be a happy/strong running engine.

If you desire more super happy fast go go times then let me know what you want ?

I have two good stock motors I want to pickle for a rainy day.Just wanna know the right way to pickle them, and also to de-pickle them.

The HOSS motor you sold me only has 4 Sundays on it.It's still good to go.Rick Matheny was really impressed with it!!

I have another head that has all new parts (valves, retainers, seats,HRC springs) that I'll put on HOSS when she starts to show wear (5% on leakdown). It still shows 0 now.I'm ready!!

Anyway, what's the best way to pickle a motor?

Can I ask the stupid question? What is pickling a motor?

Can I ask the stupid question? What is pickling a motor?

hes asking about putting the motor up for storage.... and then de-pickling would be prepping it to put it back in a running state.

Ken is asking about how to properly store an engine when not in use.

Your local yamaha dealer should have engine fogging oil in stock for all of their PWC customers. This type of fogging oil works great for a 6 month or less period of storage. If the engine is fogged and left for periods of over a year or more this fogging oil will turn into gel and stick the oil retention rings.

The f2 motor ken has uses steel cylinder liners that can corrode quickly when exposed to ozone.

Virtually all 4 stroke engine valve seats will corrode when stored for longer than 2 months. In the case of racing bikes using race fuel, the acidic effects from the aftermath of burning race fuel will speed up the process. Corrosion on the valve seats will bleed off compression which in turn leads to weak HP #'s.

I will presume the engine has already been removed from the frame.

Use some compressed air to clear out the spark plug galleys in the cylinder head. Get all the sand, dirt and whatever other garbage that currently resides there out of the galley. Lossen the spark plugs, but do not remove them entirely. Unscrew them to expose a few threads of the spark plug. Hook up a fully charged battery to a set of jumper cables placing the ground wire from the battery charger on a solid location on the engine case. Only place the positive lead from battery charger on the positive terminal on the starter motor when the engine is in a stable position. Insure that the engine can not fall over if it's just sitting on the oil pan. Use wood or a pair of tires to set the engine in to act as a stand. When the positive terminal post of the starter motor comes in contact with the jumper it will arc some electricity so make sure there is no gas or chemicals on the engine case.

Get the engine turning over and fog the engine with the fogging oil by shooting it through the intake ports. Coat liberally. Maintain engine cranking for about 7-8 seconds per port. You can also use petroleum based
engine oil, 2 stroke oils prefered, just note that you will have to replace spark plugs if you use most common 4 stroke engine oils. We leave these spark plugs loose so that in the event you over fill cylinders with engine oil it will have a route in which to escape and prevent hydro lock. Also stops the oil from flying out all over the ceiling and engine if they were removed entirely. Note worthy would be to use caution when filling with oils and not aerosol fogging agent, you should only need 25cc of oil per cylinder for most 4 cylinder engines.

Once the engine has been turned over with a liberal coating of fogging agent or engine oil than you will want to shrink wrap cylinder head to keep
out debris. In most cases you can use rubber plugs for exhaust ports.

Also insure that you have plugged up any oil galleys that bugs, dust or debris could find it's way into. Most machine have oil cooler lines and or external plumbing that gets removed when removing the engine from the frame. Insure that everything exposed is air tight.

Cap off and plug up crankcase ventilation outlets also.

When ready to use again, just remove spark plugs and turn engine over again to evacuate excess oil. Place rag over spark plug holes to prevent oil from spraying everywhere if there is excess oil in cylinder.

Install new plugs and fire engine off.

It'll smoke for a little while, but no more than 3-4 minutes.

Happy Storage.
