My bike is currently at Shadetree and Derek has been racking his brains out trying to get this pig running good again. Its a 2002 R6 (it has 1999-2000 wiring though...) and I am looking for a CDI to test it against. If you are willing to let Derek borrow the CDI off of your bike so we know if thats the problem, I will buy you a case of beer of your choice...Or if you prefer (or do not drink) I will give you $20. I really need to get my bike moving again, and any help would be much appreciated.

Heres the story leading up to this...My bike starts and idles great. It will also accelerate out of the hole just fine too, but as soon as you try to maintain a constant speed it will bog down and barely do 35mph (in third with the throttle wide open). If you know what this may be, or have had a similar problem, please let me know what needs to be done to cure this. Derek has completely gone through the carbs, the entire fuel system (mechanically and electrically...minus the CDI) and I just put a new fuel filter and spark plugs on it. This problem occured after dumping some Lucas brand fuel additive in the tank (seemed like a good idea at the time), but doesnt seem to be a factor at this point. Any thoughts/ideas/or personal experienced knowledge would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Easy. Don't maintain a constant speed. :D

Could it be a voltage regulator/rectifier? Is that an issue on Yamahas?

Just as another idea, I remember there being a widespread TPS (throttle position sensor) recall for several Yamahas. Kat's old FZ6 suffered from it a little bit - sometimes constant throttle would result in stumbling and bucking. If your R6 is carb'd, it might not even have one, but...

ND4SPD you might be on to something there. Someone else had previously mentioned that being an issue on his 2001 R6, and I couldnt remember what it was to tell Derek. I will mention that to him and see if thats the problem. Thanks

Mike,
My bike is carbed (last year before FI) but it does have a TPS. Derek checked it, and it is within specs. Perhaps something to keep in mind though. Any other thoughts please keep 'em coming! Thanks.

If his Tach isn't bouncing while the bike is on or running, the TPS is fine. There's an error code to indicate that.

I think it might be you R/R

I have had plug wires go bad on a car and acted the same. Ran fine until under a heavy load and or high RPM.

Thanks for all of the input and advice from everyone. So far, Derek has checked out everything with the exception of the CDI...When I say he has checked out everything...I mean EVERYTHING! As most of you know, this man is very thorough! Anyhow, at this point I desperatly need a 99-00 CDI for an R6...Derek would prefer to have the entire bike at his shop to look things over and I can promise you it wouldnt take very long. Also, if you were willing to do this (or at least loan out your known good CDI for a couple minutes...for testing) there is an incentive in it for you. Beer, $20...I am poor...You name your price, and I will see what I can do...I am rotting from the inside out without my bike! Thanks again for everyones words of wisdom, and I hope someone steps up and helps out a fellow biking brother! Thanks.

it sounds to me like a fuel issue especially if it started after ading an additive I have noticed lately that fuel isn't worth a shit now I think that they are diluting it or something I can't let it sit for long at all before it goes bad

Thanks for the input. I bought a used CDI off of ebay...Bad idea. Sent me a junk one...or at least I hope. The bike definatley ran differently after I installed it, but not any better. DK has already been through the entire fuel system. Thought it was a bad pump, so that was replaced. Thought it was in the carbs, so he rebuilt the carbs. DK believes 100% that its in the wiring/CDI. Since all of my knowledge is in cars, I must trust what he says. The bike is currently at his shop and he his attempting to gain access to a "test mule". Hopefully swapping out some parts will pin point the problem...Until then I wait.............................................. .................................................. .....................

Oh, yeah...To answer a previous question of yours...The bike will idle and rev all day long. I can rev the shit out of it right up to the rev limiter, but the second you go to ride it...impossible. It does run okay below 25 mph...hell it even runs good when you get on it. I have raced that thing up through the gears several times and it scoots right along, but its really when you try to maintain speed is where it screws up...Makes me think that its running way advanced timing, which would be controlled by the CDI. Or the CDI is getting bad input from one of the sensors that it relies on...But I am not getting hit with a code, so I wouldnt think that to be the case either. :wall: Thats about where I am with this POS right now....So until it gets fixed (God willing, before I deploy in a month)...I will continue to do this.......:wall:
