View Full Version : Mountain ride

It won't be too long before it gets too hot, so is anyone up for a mountain journey this month? I don't care which road or roads, we just need to get it in before it gets too nasty out.

So, those who are up for it, lets discuss a place and date.

monday the 26th is off for memorial day.... so the weekend starting on the evening of the 30th, onward until late monday night is likely open for most.

Yeah, Memorial Day weekend will be nuts. I've done that once and won't do it again, cruisers everwhere! But the weekend of the 30th sounds good to me.

I was actually thinking about taking a ride up to the mountains on
Saturday. Are you talking about riding the bike up for a day or
using four wheels to get them up to the mountains ? I say we
do it on two wheels. :yeah:

P.S.

The cornerjunkie track studs will be down at Roebling
Sunday June 1st.

well depending on where we might be riding, Im in...

There's a place up where I used to live called Ceasar's Head in northern south carolina prolly about a 3.5 hour trip, but well worth it, very nice up there.

Looks like it'll be the last weekend in May. Now, we need to find out exactly where we're going. The Gap or another spot? Does anyone know if the police have chilled out at the Gap? Middle Tennessee is still an option but not too sure if people want to make extra 2 hour drive.

Nash
05-14-2008, 07:41 AM
Just read the Gap report and there's normally a 2 to 3 LOE car presence. Could be good, could be bad. Anyway, we need to make a decision pretty soon where we're going.

TAIL OF THE DRAGON EXCLUSIVE – The State of Tennessee is spending more than $200,000 of Federal Funds to add overtime patrols at the Dragon this summer. The Tennessee Highway Patrol received a $75,183.75 grant and the Blount County Sherriff Office is receiving $125,022.48. These grants began October 1, 2007 and will end on September 30, 2008.

if you do the math on the grants, plus the regular patrol and emergency services, and add everythign up, its 10mil a year for just the tennessee part of that road. crazy.

I would be down to go. Got a truck and open trailer so I could load a couple passengers if needed.

What type of overnight arrangements you kids thinking about or normally do?

Fontana Dam, but not on May 30th or June 1st.

How about June 7th & 8th :yeah:

I guess we need to figure out what week
McCoy's R1/R6 convention is gonna be so we
don't have to worry about dodge'n flame'n Yamafla's.

Scootimus
05-16-2008, 08:20 AM
7th & 8th don't work for me, I'll be on my way to Boston.

I have never been to The Gap so I don't know what I'm missing yet. I don't know of the good spots for riding, hell I've had to ride with you guys just to find a couple of the roads around here. I've driven many different parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the cage so that's always a decent choice in my book.

Nash
05-16-2008, 09:23 AM
First, the weekend of 31 May is the weekend we've planned for. If you can't make it, sorry, we'll try and schedule another one later.

Second, this is just a few weeks away and I don't have a lot confirmed. The Gap is still a hot spot with the TN LOE and bad choice right now. The Gap is a good road but it's not the only good road in TN/NC. I'd rather stay away from that area all together, but there hasn't been alot of comments about alternate locations.

Sooo, as of right now I'm planning on middle TN with the three people I have confirmed. If more speak up, and don't won't to go to middle TN, now is your chance, as we can make adjustments.

If we do go to middle TN, I do ask one thing of you guys....please, don't discuss "our/my" spot on other forums. Right now, it's very LOW traffic and I'd hate for these roads ruined by riders wanting an alternative to the Gap.

I'm another one that cannot make it the weekend of May 30/31st. You guy's will have a blast I'm sure. Nash as you know already, if you wait for people on this forum to go, you will never make it to the mountains.

Nash, Maybe if we drug them at the next bike night at Wings ETC we can kidnap them. What was the drug they used on Mr. T in the A-Team? That should work.

Sounds good, Scootimus! A blind fold might be good, because the places we'll go the locals don't like out of town guests! :smilebig:

We now have a grand total of 4 and possibly 2 more by mid week. I talked to Chris Mc this week and he said he's in, but I'll believe it when I see it! As of right now my trailer is full, that is if Chris goes. If Chris doesn't go, I have an open spot. Scootimus, do you have transportation? If Chris doesn't go, you're more than welcome to join us...

And yes, Barry, we are going this time. I go every year by myself, that part hasn't changed, but I've always failed to get you guys to tag along. If you don't go it's not my loss! :evillaugh:

Scootimus
05-18-2008, 04:39 PM
I do have transportation if your ride is full. I would also have room for more peeps if needed. 4 door truck and trailer. Maybe we can talk bout this at wings on tuesday night to get the plan in full swing. Oh yeah, then I could actually meet ya!

Scootimus

Yeah, it was my wife's birthday that day so I wasn't going to make that night of all nights. Anyway, there's two of us going for sure, Matt P. and me. We're leaving next Sat. morning and we're staying until the following Wednesday. I'm still waiting on conformation from one of my other friends. Hopefully, I'll know this weekend.

Tracy and I are riding up to the mountains on Thursday (6/5), returning Sunday at the latest. We're hell bent on avoiding weekend traffic and bicyclists. We don't have any formal plans, but there are some real mean twisties off the Blue Ridge I'd like to ride again. Stuff that is made for 50's or go karts :D

Unfortunately, Tracy rides a chrome turd, so I will probably wear out the center of my back tire on this trip...

We'll probably head towards Ashville and pick up the BRP. There's a great restaurant at Pisgah with a mean trout dish. We may even spend the night in their little motel, if I can get reservations. From there, we'll probably cruise the BRP South to Maggie Valley (if the cabin is available) or to Cherokee and head over to the Tennessee border to pick up 129 by Deals Gap. Hwy 28 is a fun road, once you get there...

I want to take Tracy to Eagle falls (off the Cherohala) and run to the Blood Mountain area of N. Ga; I love the Richard Russell loop (between Blairsville and Helena, Ga.). Hwy 180 and Wolf Pen Gap is nearby, and Wolf Pen is one of my all time favorite roads - Much more fun than Deals Gap. Deals Gap isn't the same since TSP started upping patrols. I've stayed at a campground called Skeenah, off Hwy 60 (near TWO) a few times, and Martha (the owner) sometimes rents rooms.

Heading towards S. Carolina through Highlands, NC is a nice ride. From there, we'll pick up the Cherokee foothills parkway (hwy 11) and back to the flat country and back to the Lowcountry.

Should be a nice little loop :)

I can not recommend these maps enough. They will show you routes as good as the gap with no cops. Also shows pit stops and radar zones.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the ride with Nash and friend this weekend. We shall let you kids know what fun ya missed!

I did a ride from the Gap to Hazard KY with Mooseload and we only passed ONE car the whole ride over the mountain we were on. About a 20 mile mountain ride much better than the Gap. The maps were first made with motorcyclist in mind.

You can download the maps to a GPS if you have one.

No patent... Have at it!

With my son's 3rd grade graduation this coming weekend, I'm missing the ZRXOA Rally at the Skeenah, Ga. campground. Riding up there with those hooligans is where I learned about some of those roads. Those yahoos would ride 300+ mile group rides through the twisties in multistate loops every day for 3 or 4 days during the YTRAP rally (at a very brisk pace, I might add :D). The other part I learned exploring roads off the BRP when I would stay at my brother's "cabin" in Maggie Valley.
