I had something similar happen to me while on my way back from Atlanta. I was on the interstate directly behind a Honda Civic when I started to smell burnt rubber. Seconds later, the Civic's right rear tire blew apart, and sent the car sideways into the grassy median. It was stopped from crossing into oncoming traffic by a steel cable barrier. Me? I was counting my lucky stars, because the car could've done anything, looped around, smashed into the traffic besides me, etc, yet it did the most harmless thing it could've.
