its simple to get around.
FTP a small file to your server.
set the remote avatar to that file.
then FTP in again and replace the file with the larger file that you want.

open up windows... open a folder... in the address bar type "ftp://yourserver.whatever/publicfolder" or whatever.. put your username/password in the popup
then just copy and paste like its a folder

if you cant see the address bar... goto the menu View->Toolbars->Address bar.
