View Full Version : Anyone have an M22x1.5 die?

I screwed up some threads on my axle shaft for my car and can't seem to find a die this size that isn't in a set. If someone has one i could borrow for a day please let me know! It would be much easier if it was the type that you put a socket over and not the type with the special handle piece that goes around the die, that way I don't have to take the shaft back out of the knuckle due to the lug studs being in the way of turning the die.

If anyone knows where I can find my own that would be helpful too.

Thanks!

metric thread file...

it's damaged far beyond the help of a threadfile, i shouldn't even be attempting to repair it but i want to try and see how it holds, if i still think it's sketchy after trying to fix it i'll get a new shaft. I already have threadfiles and taps and dies, a whole kit from snapon but it doesn't go anywhere near up to M22. also the thread files are a bitch to use they keep jumping teeth and i end up doing more damage than good most times. i think i might be pushing too hard? well anyway these are beyond that, i thought i had the axle nut on and hit it with an impact gun.. well.. it was crossthreaded :( thankfully i stopped before it was on TOO far and some threads are good at the other end which is the only reason i'm attempting to repair it.

I understand..........Can ya grind off the bad and still have enough threads to be safe?

if it is for a cv shaft they make repair kits for them

I think i damaged too many threads to chop them all off, also then i'd lose the cotter pin hole which i might want on there if the threads are bad

Yes it is, all i've seen for a kit is the set of dies for them which is like $50+, if i was a mechanic it would be worth it but since it's mostly just the one car i mess with its overkill for me

yeah but it is at least 50 for a cv shaft

I think you just better bite it....Replace it before someone gets hurt.
By the way just what is the auto?

you're probably right and in the long run i'm sure that's what i'll end up doing but this isn't the first time i've damaged these threads so probably still going to try to find the die. It's a 98 3000gt vr4, i just rebuilt the engine and had the turbos bored out... it should be pretty damn fast when i'm done just have a few issues keeping me from getting it back on the road.. and the motorcycle has been making me uninterested in the car lately

bah, the real solution requires more work...

you need to remove that FWD transaxle and rotate your engine 90*.... then put a real transmission behind it, and hang a decent rear axle in the back.
at that point, you can simply leave out the front CV shafts.

you buy the parts, and i'll help you with it... :smilebig:

lol.. the car is already AWD although your solution would eliminate the front transfer case weakness

i would recommend replacing the shaft, but to get you by, snap-on sells the tool you require.
