The people who are here are working. Some, like as-yet unsigned for 2009 rider Jake Zemke, are doing so on faith. Others, like new AMA Pro Racing employee Al Ludington, have switched careers, moved their families. The Yamaha garage is full of crew, tearing open UPS overnight packages stuffed with factory R1 parts. Bostrom, Hayes, Herrin and Aquino are lapping, they pit in, then go back out and lap, lap, lap. Pegram and his guys work thru the teething pains on their 1098R, turning a streetbike into an American Superbike. Neil Hodgson is on the track, Doug Toland too, dipping their toes, seeing what an American Honda CBR100RR feels like when built under 2009 DMG rules. A handful of journos and photogs occupy the painfully quiet media room. AMA officials are wearing new tan coloured uniforms, and speak softly, like Art Museum security guards. There is no shouting and little joviality.
