We seem to have a lot more active members, so I'm putting this up for discussion again. I'd like to choose a new name for the forum before the new season gets into full swing, something that's easier to remember, easier to say, and more encompassing. I'd like to choose a name before the 14th of March (no, it's not a coincidence).

I'm also considering changing the forum software (essentially what you see and use when you're here) to the best software out there, known as vbulletin. This stuff is not free, though, and I'm not about to pirate it, so I'll have to look at getting some financial backing/sponsorship for this as well as hosting, which as it stands right now expires in the beginning of June.

Here are the domain names to choose from. I own all of these right now, and most of them already point here. They are the result of several of us getting together and coming up with names, as well as name availability (in other words, more ideas were kicked around, but those domain names were already taken).

I would prefer a name that covered more than just Charleston, and something that doesn't exclude too many people, but anyways, if someone comes up with something brilliant that's not on the list, post it up.

So, please discuss and choose YOUR forum's next official name (the others will still continue to point here until/unless I get an offer I can't refuse on the ancillary domains):

Come to think of it, rather than choosing one, how about everyone pick three? That way, the most popular one will be it?

lowcountrybikes has my vote.

It's all encompassing. It doesn't discriminate on type of bike and if the forum grows big enough it can encompass the south region of the country (wishful thinking, I know).

Well, we are all sportbikers. I think it really hard to mix other types of bikes.

I like Lowcountry Riders.

1 reason why I really like this name is because if the group every decided to do another charity event it might bring others out that don't ride sport bikes. Like just say some ol' coot on a Gold Wing says well if it is a sportbike event I can't hang with them folk. Or something like that.

Nash
03-10-2006, 07:46 AM
I myself am proud to a sportbiker. If others don't like it, then the hell with'em!

What I'm getting at.....any name we choose, we have to set the example. If we do a few nice things for the community, have mature people represent us, our name will get out no matter what bike we ride.

I also understand a few people want different type bikes on here. While that sounds great, I don't think it will ever work. I don't know of one 'mixed' biking forum on the internet that has been successful. Our personalities and reason for riding are too different. Of course this my opinion based on what I've seen over the past 16 years.

SUM650
03-10-2006, 08:15 AM
I agree Nash. I would guess that 99 % of the people here ride a sportbike. I can count the few conversations on one hand about crusiers, dirtbikes or jetski's that popup here. So why are we still shooting me this pie in the sky dream to mix the comunities? Hell I even tried to ride with a crusier group for a while last year. I really like the folks, but they were on on page and I was on another. We can call the group whatever we want, but the topic of dicussion is still going to be sportbikes day in and day out.

Mike
03-10-2006, 08:53 AM
You two have a pretty good point. The successful bike forums that I've been to pretty much specialize in one type of bike (whether by brand name, model, or ridintg style), and my hope is/was that we could choose a forum name that's more representative of the region we live in rather than what type of bikes we ride or why we ride them, mainly because there are already some very large, very successful national/international sport bike forums where regional identity and flavor is lost.

How about Summertime Riders. Since that is when ya'll ride. :evillaugh:

Hey now :smilebig:

I think it's impractical to have a poll with that many domain names. I'm also worried that just like last time, we won't come to an agreement on the name, and I'll most likely just pick something based on the general mood.

Kat_Mac

You've had three people vote for Lowcountry... Why not put a poll up with lowcountry domains?

Nash

Lowcountry Sportbikes was the old school name a few years ago. That's the only reason I'm not too fond of it, but voting in any name, I'm cool with it.

...but voting in any name, I'm cool with it.

Sorry, I don't understand that. Do you mean that you're cool with 'Lowcountry Sportbikes', or the use of 'Lowcountry' in the name?

It does seem that we're drifting towards lowcountry-something (even if it is a mouthful). I'd like to see more discussion, especially from members that haven't weighed in yet.

I guess I'm still fond of that name after all these years. Mike

Oh, duh, I ought to pick some too, even though I like most of them.

lowcountryriders (low coun try ri ders dot com... lots of syllables, but at least it flows amd it represents the region nicely)

leanedover (I like the fact that it's only four syllables in total, it applies to all bikes, and even watercraft)

rideinthesouth (it flows well, it works for this region, and could eventually encompass more than just sportbikes)

DragonFZ6
03-10-2006, 01:00 PM
If I had to pick 3 it would be:

1. CharlestonPowerSports (Includes dirt, sports, etc)

2. LowcountryBikers (Includes a larger region and all bikes)

3. SCRiders (Maybe too broad of a region, but still good)

There you go :)

Stay local, stay on sportbikes. If you think it works to encompass more than that take a look at SCRiders - lots of room for dirtbikes, quads, and participation state wide but those areas never took off.

If you want businesses to help sponsor events you better use something that makes sense to people when they first hear the name. My .02 - lowcountry is played out and overused - something with Charleston is specific enough to get locals involved and excited - the word "sportbike" scares some people, ie businesses and old people (stupid but it does).

CharlestonKneeDraggers is cool. I'd follow up on that if I heard it.

Nash
03-12-2006, 08:46 AM
I totally agree with Tom. Everywhere you look, its Lowcountry this or that. My top three.

CharlestonApex (I feel like I should explain my first choice. I like this because alot of people might not know what Apex means and might be curious enough to check it out. It represents us here in Charleston looking for corners and also the local Charleston racers. Also, has room to add other powersports and it has a bit of mature flair.)

CharlestonKneeDraggers (I like the last two equally.)

Well, if that's the problem you can always abbreviate Charleston to CHS.

2 things I've learned about building and promoting websites. Keep the name as simple as possible (ie, memerable) and set the addy so anyone can type it out by the letter. In other words, no abbreviation, dashes or numbers. People have a 2 second attention span. If you want them to remember it via word of mouth and casual conversation it has to be quick, simple and too the point. Enough of my long winded rambeling...

I vote...
cornerjunkies.com.
charlestonpowersports.com (although that sounds like a dealership)

Mike

I'm back.

From the list, cornerjunkies and lowcountryriders seem to be the most popular so far (with, uuhh, about four votes each). Unless something weird happens in the next 24 hours, one of those two names will be the new forum name. Which one? Well, I'll tally up the votes, but ulness there's a 2/3 or so preference by you guys to use cornerjunkies, we'll go with lowcountryriders (it's already paid for for the next five or so years). Good? Bad? Whatever?

dumwinnie
03-12-2006, 09:34 PM
either, doesn't really matter, but personally, i associate lowcountry with south carolina's superior educational products. no offense towards anyone, but unless you put boil after lowcountry, i immideately conjure up images of mullets and low tooth to head ratios. i can only assume that i do this because i'm not from here. like i said, no offense to anyone, this is a fault of mine. just figured i'd share.
