View Full Version : Roots of the tree.

Well i had a thought. Who started it. So lets name the people we remember at the tree when we went there and see how far it goes back.
The three that come to my mind are
Ken on the sazuk with Shane on the sazuk sarad and Richie. that was in 1999 anyone able to go further back? shane where ya at?

As stated in many other posts, Kenny and Jeff started it once the Donaray (sp) Apt manager complained of the loud bikes every weekend. This also happen when there was almost zero traffic in the mall parking lot.

I bet there are only about 3 or 4, of the original group, who still ride locally.

Once upon a time probably about 10 years ago or more, there was a outlaw sportbike group in Charleston called the Low Country Sportbike Club. Some of the members are on this forum. Shane, Kenny, Dave, Charles, myself and probably several other people that I'm missing here. Anyway on any given Sunday there were at least 20 to 30 bikes to show up. Going to deals gap 6 to 10 times a summer was the norm. I think that Kenny probably went at least 10 times a summer, no lie. On the Sunday rides everyone met up at Jeff Mantillia's apartment on Dorchester road, right next to the speedway. To make a long story short we caused to many problems with meeting up at the apartments. I guess the parking lot races, burn outs, wheelies, and loud bikes made the apartment manager a little upset. Everyone wanted a central location to meet up so the mall it was.

well damn that went alot shorter than i thought lol

Even before the "tree" there were two groups of sportbike groups in the Charleston area. At this time there were around 30 sportbikes total in the area and everyone knew each other. The larger group was in North Charleston (15 to 20 bikes) that later turned into the "tree" group and the other group was in James Island (10 to 12 bikes). This was all pre '99 before the big sportbike boom, of course.

900RF / Barry rode that piece of Crap.

'97 GSXR750 (blue with white racing stripes) / Ty, still the best paint scheme I have seen on a bike in Charleston.

'97 GSXR750 (red, black and silver)

'96 GSXR750 (yellow black) Arron, this was the best non blue/white color that suzuki ever used.

'95 CBRF2 (several of these but name them) Didn't you have a F2? It seemed like everyone and there brother had a F2.

'97 YZF1000 (2 of these in town) DJ and Jack, I think that Jack still has some fairing left up at KWS.

'92 GSXR1100 (built to the hilt)

'95 ZX7RR (this one is tough) / Mark rode this beautiful machine. I absolutly loved that bike. I wonder if they are work anything in good condition?

Didn't Kenny have a sacked out fzr 600?

Charles had a VFR 750 right.

Jeff had the tank. ZX 7R

That is true. I was a street newbie myself back during that time. Richie, Alan, Mike Walker, and myself learned to ride wheelies all about the same time several years later. Our teacher was the big boy himself Chris Vanhoy. Chris was doing standup wheelies, one hand standup wheelies, power wheelies with one hand, every type of burn out you can imagine, endo's and all sorts of tricks. This was before anyone ever heard of a starboy. So if you see a huge, crazy, and wild fireman riding a custom chopper name Chris around town, trust me the boy has some skills. Oh and don't think he is afraid of the corners. Big boy has left us all a many of times while riding the dragon.

I went to the tree today.... was very disturbed to learn from more than one sorce that we are now targeted by the local police. the state troopers are blocking off i-26 deep looking for us and the county cop today told me they were comeing to toogadoo for us but we were early due to steve getting his last ride in. ALOT of people got wrote with tickets a couple of warnings handed out. uhhhh btw
Jerrmy wrecked today at toogadoo also. he is being released from the hospital now. hes ok but the bike is done.

SUM650

Don't be alarmed about what you've heard about the police wanting to catch us. This is to general of a term to say which group that they really want to catch or do they want to catch all of the groups. The police mostly think that there is one group of sportbikes in town. They don't know that on a good Sunday afternoon there could be anywhere form 4 to 8 different groups of sportbikers on the road. These same riders ride the same roads that we ride. Just at different times. So when they say they were looking for us they meant they are looking for a sportbike group. Again this happens year after year. I don't think that the Sunday group that rides with us has been riding foolishly down I-26? That's one reason we have the talks before we ride. Don't ride like a fool on the streets before we hit the back roads! Now I cannot speak for the SC riders, colors, 140 plus, wolf pack, I-26 boys or several other groups that I didn't name. Stunting up and down I-26 and on the streets will bring heat to every sportbiker in the area. I wished we could have gotten Jeremy to the track before he destroyed his bike. Maybe this wreck wouldn't have happened. Riding your bike to the limits on the street is just not the place for it. Only bad things can come from it. Jeremy is a super nice guy, so I relieved to here that he is ok. I hope that everything works out with him on his bike. I know he learned a lesson today. The good thing is that he lived to walk away from this. Hopefully some of the other newbie riders saw this and will take heed.

03-20-2006, 02:23 AM
yea... well what shocked me is someone mentioned earlier that the no limit boys got poped by a state troopes sting on I-26. there were 17 cops and they had a road block.... Well when jerrmey went down there was a county cop being cool with me and then his boss showed up. his responce
Him "so where are the rest of them?"
me "who's them"
him "the pack of street racers"
me I dont know what your talking about"
him "well son we know yall are at the mall in north charleston and go 1 of 3 directions. me and my buddy here were here in togadoo but yall were early. However we have police on 41 waitiing so why dont you stop Bsing me and tell me where they are? "
me "well my buddy is over there in the mud and im here what do you want me to tell ya?"
Him " well if your not going to tell me i might have to write some tickets"
Me {flipping out} "For what wreckless endagerment to pluff mud? Stoping to help a falen rider? man look I dont know what your talking about, and furthermore dont apritiate the threat. But i cant help you. my main concern is him and his bike."
him "sounds like he was following to closly" {then he rambles off into some backk in his day story, dont know wasnt paying attention}

Cops at the tree?

For a long long time now I have always heard from some different folk that if you go to the tree becareful. I have heard that some cops sit in a car writing down everyone plate number and what they wear. I have also heard at times that there was a cop that wpould show up on a bike and also get the same info. I down care how good of a person you are. If you ride a motorcycle you are a target.

I've never seen a cop sitting taking information, not to say it doesn't happen. The only cop I've seen asked us to move our bikes out of the way, so it sounds like cops setting a trap is just an urban legend....but I could be wrong. Maybe it's time to break up the tree for a bit and find other places to ride. The tree group is getting too large anyway.

Sounds like a good idea Dave smaller groups = less attention. But I will say that the group that meets at the tree now is not like the group 2 years ago. It was all about stunting then, so I'm glad things have changed. Any ideas as to were a new spot to meet could be?

That cop sitting at the tree writing down plate numbers is nothing but a bad rumor! I disagree about trying to make the group smaller or to meet in another place. What are we to do, tell certain people that they cannot ride with us? Why, they didn't do anything wrong. We can certainly ostracize ourselves from any newbie’s wanting to join the group, but is that right? Weather we meet at the tree or another place, the cops aren't going to like sport bikers. There are too many idiot’s and groups around town for us to change this mentality. What will you be gaining by meeting at another place? Kat we can't get people to show up to leave at 1:00 PM much less breakfast. Where we meet is not the issue in my opinion, it's how we leave that is sometime the problem. When were going out of town weather it is I-26 or whatever we just need to watch our speed and slow it down a little. The last few times that I have ridden with the group this has not really been an issue. Accidents happen form time to time. Jeremy did a bad thing by pushing it past his limits on the street, and he is paying the price. We just need to constantly remind the newbie’s to slow it down and to take it easy.

Listen, weather we have 5 in a group or 15 in our group, cops are going to target us if they see us acting up. So what's the key? Don't act up on the streets in town! There are plenty of back roads to do this on without any cops around. Now that doesn't mean the back roads should be used as a track. It just means that you are in a better environment to go at a faster pace as long as your in control.

To take things further I think that our group is setting the example of how a sport bikers can ride together safely as a group. This group has changed 180 degrees from the way we used to ride just a year ago. You don't see us cutting up and wheeling up and down I-26 and on the streets. You don't see us revving the engines like idiots and drawing unnecessary attention, or doing burnouts in the parking lot. Our group is promoting riding safely, in control on the streets so were talking about it and spreading the news. For example we all were our helmets, and we take the time to inform new riders of some general safety guides that we try to follow. Can we do better? Yes we can and yes we will. Of all the sport bike groups in town, how many got together and gave to charity? How many have a forum where they talk about riding safety on the streets as we do? Avidly promote new riders to doing track days so they can increase there riding skills, and have an avenue to ride there bikes to the limit in a safe environment. Some people don't like riding is a group, like Steve, and some people just want to ride in a very small group. That's all cool, do your thing. I like riding with the group. Like minded people that have the same passion for riding sport bikes as I do. Apparently, you people are like me. That’s why your on this forum and that’s why you show up to ride together on Sunday. Let’s find more ways to do it safer instead of trying to outcast certain people is what I’m voting for. Dave you just came up with and idea to have a rider awareness and skills day. What an excellent idea. These are going to be the type of things make our group better and safer riders on the street.

Nash

Once again Barry well said. I don't think that anyone was trying to outcast any other riders. Large groups have always worried me but I always seem to get talked into riding anyway. When you have 30 bikes you have so many different riding experience levels, and the biggest problem, idea of what a Sunday ride should be. On one end you have the slow inexperienced riders that slow the pace way down, and on the other extreme you have a few folks that think it's Isle of Man. I would love to slow the pace, even more than it has in the past year, and this group at one time was full throttle from start to finish. We can still ride a brisk pace and still get the adrenaline out...also it may help with those damn rock chips. The problem is slowing down people. I've tried to ride out front at a brisk pace then someone thinks I'm racing and passes me, and then others behind him pass and so on. Hopefully, this forum will help work out this problem but it's a tough one to fix. For the brand new riders, they shouldn't be riding with this group. I not trying to be mean but even at a slow pace it's too fast of a pace and too many other riders in the group for an inexperienced rider to ride.

With that being said, just like I tried last weekend, riders should have the option to ride somewhere at a slower pace but have the same interaction of our group. Riding downtown is a perfect ride to get experience riding in a group and also you enable the new person socialize once downtown. Just talking to someone after a ride and giving tips can jump the experience in one ride. But all this is just an idea and I'm still working the safety day thing which I think would be very helpful to everyone.

ahhhh, the legend still lingers..........guys/gals, it's simple. make sure you have your insurance and license squared away, and just fucking take it easy until you get to the destination in which you are riding. you are not gonna impress anyone with stand ups or what the fuck ever. unless you can take an exit ramp on one wheel with your knee on the ground sitting on the bike backwards then just cool it in town. and stop going to toogoodoo!!!! the tree is the only "legend" don't kill the legend being ignorant, please. i'm proud of the tree, it's the one place that if someone moves away for a while and comes back to see old faces and get in a good ride, he/she knows they can go to the tree. just my thoughts. how bout we throw a huge pocker run here soon and have some fun. any thoughts. my facility is availiable.

03-20-2006, 03:34 PM
hey how about cool down the rides. no one here is going to convince me that we have been riding safe at 170+. Me bing one of them. Being there with j man really got my attention. Yea im rockin the crown but damn we have sped up significantly here latley. how about a sunday ride down town to hang on the battery and talk shop or eat or something. The pack here latley has been 1/2 people who have learned to go fast and 1/2 "I can if he can"er's. the cops are wrong for signialing us out but there is some reason in there thinking. we need to slow down. Everytime i have taken the ten out i have toped her at some point that day. I will not do that again. we need to have a sobering moment before we are given one the hard way. Anyone remember justin?

what do you mean the tree needs to slow down we have already i remember we use to ride a whole lot faster.............whar we need is to do like we have been doing and let everyone know the deal before we leave and i am up for longer rides ..........and i remeber justin and he had nothing to do with the tree.......also from what i have heard justins accident was because he to wasn't paying attention but i can't say for sure in his case............and i have been there when someone died at the tree and it had nothing to do with doing 170 plus...........it had everything to do with people not paying attention...................maybe you want to slow it down because you know that you are going to lose that crown to a suzuki this year

03-20-2006, 04:48 PM
Look im not worried about the crown or title or the but tons of shit talking you dish out just so kieth can shut you down. im more concered with loosing a friend. screw the crown.

Riding downtown to park a bike and look pretty is what I call a POSER. This something I am not. I enjoy riding my motorcycle. That doesn't mean that I have to ride it at top speed on the street. We cannot stop everyone from speeding and going 170 mph like you Randy. The next time you do that, look around and see how many people are around you. Only one or to people. The last time I rode with the group two weeks ago I rode my sv. The bike will not go over 130mph with a strong tail wind, and I was with the front group. So I know this group has slowed down a lot. Again we cannot stop everyone like you Randy from blowing past us and going 170 mph down a road. However, I'm glad that your seeing the error of you ways and you will slow down on the street. Hopefully you will convince others to do the same.

To fill you in on a little history Randy. A little over a year ago there was a motorcycle fatality that several of us on this board witnessed. After that we came together and said that we wanted to ride in a safer manner and discuss how we as a group could do this. Steve R., Chris, Dave, and myself decided that we needed a local forum to do this. Mike K. had just started up dkf2.com and here we are today. Again this group is much safer than we were a year ago. Can we be better yes, but if you think that all of us street riders are going to become downtown cruising posers think again. It just ain't going to happen. So you can either help the situation by trying to help the group or you can cruise downtown. You have the choice. One more thing, are you really helping your friend by turning your back on him and riding alone, and leaving him to continue riding the way he does. Or should you ride with that friend. Explain to him the error of his ways, and show him alternatives and places to ride his bike in a manner, where he can test his skills. You tell me which is better? One more thing for the third time, cops are safety officers first. They are concerned for the safety of the public. There are a lot of people doing crazy stuff on the streets of Charleston on sport bikes. So how are they to determine who's good and who's bad? Should they profile? No, but take my word on this one, it happens. As long as you ride a sport bike on the street you will fit a certain profile. So be on your best behavior while on the streets in the public. Set the example.

I dont want the tree to go down town everytime i was saying this weekend. barry, I got to be real with ya man if your saying im the only one flying.... your not on the same ride as me. when my ten took a dump dave and stever were in front of me. Mike was ten feet behind me.... I dont understand why "I" am the only one going fast? this weekend i was on the 6 {154mph} i was passed by EVERYONE on a 1000. that makes junebug, dave ,steve, new guy on the gsxr1k, and uhhhh yea chris was on my 3 oclock... there were 2 bikes behind me and one was in the marsh.... so "I" am not the only one here. sigleing me out is BS. the whole damn pack needs to slow down or we will burry someone this year......

You still don't get it Randy. Just because Steve goes 300 mph down a road doesn't mean you have to. You don't have the same skill level as Steve, Dave and Several other guys that you named. So ride at a pace that you can be safe. I can ride at a pace on some roads and be in complete control and you maybe at the limits of your skill level. How many times have you heard me and several others say STOP TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH OTHER PEOPLE! Ride your on ride. The more skilled riders will usually ride at a pace faster than the less skilled riders. That's why we always tell everyone to take there time, DO NOT WORRY ABOUT GOING FAST TO KEEP UP WITH ANYONE. We will always wait for you at the next turn. I think that someone has not been listening when we have the preride speeches Randy.

03-20-2006, 07:18 PM
I have. and i havent wrecked because of it but in one post you said i was going fast but no one else was in the next it's everyones going fast. the only problem i have is you singled me out sayin i was the only one going 170 plus. thats not true.

03-20-2006, 07:21 PM

you guys are getting a little out of wack with this whole thing, we get these bikes because of how they perform, just use your head when you decide to test it. there is a time and place for these things. you can have a good time while keeping the bike under 100mph, but come on, you are gonna wack it open once in a while. we all love the feeling, but this feeling can have it's consiquences. be it a ticket, injury or death. so make sure you have room for error when riding aggressively (i.e. "runoff" room). unfortunately, the only way to do it safely is on the race track. just try to have fun within limits and be safe, but it's up to us to find what those limits are without getting out of hand. now i'm just rambling on i guess, can't we go back to talking about the old days? that was cool.

i don't think that dave or steve have bikes that will do 170 so in know that they weren't doing and second you would be a moron to be doing 170 down toogoodoo ...............and like we have all said we need to ride our own pace .............i know that steve and dave can handle toogoodoo...............and if i am going to do 170 plus it will be on 41 ............just because i or anyone else does it does that mean that you sor someone else should....NOOOOOOOOOOOO................people know there own limits i can't say that i know your limits or anyone elses but i know that if someone has less experience and feel that they are scaring themselves or are nervous while trying to keep up then they need to slow down when i first started riding with the tree i worked my way from the back of the pack as i began to feel more comfortable i remmeber plain as day my first ride with the tree and i knew my limits as i do now and everyone needs to do the same so what if someone wants to jump out front for bragging rights if they are sure that they can handle then so be it but if they are not sure then they shouldn't be doing it i will not judge my ride on someone elses stupidity i will tell them as we have to ride thier own ride and not try to keep up with me...............if i feel that someone is on my ass that shouldn't be then yeah i will slow down i have done it many times before and a couple of times come to mind Barry may know the two that i think of..........there will be people who feel that they have something to prove and there will be only so much that we can do to keep them safe but keeping them safe is not our responsibilty it is ther own so PEOPLE RIDE YOUR OWN RIDE

03-20-2006, 09:12 PM
i agree chris..... i do.. i just dont want to see someone really hurt... I had alot of people ask me when j's bike was on the flatbed if "that guy live?" kinda got my attention...

Why not during the week some of you that gather at the tree, bust out a map and pick some new roads to go riding on. Don't post it on here just incase the law dog is looking in these forums. Then at the gathering talk the route over with some others and see what they think. That way you get to see new things, your not always on the same roads that everyone knows you ride. Sure you will still see cops out but there won't be tons of them waiting for you. Go out and enjoy the ride. No one has to always be hauling ass to have fun on a bike. Ride your own ride and have a ball.
There are tons of back roads out there that are waiting to have some one ride them.

Who rode the?

ZX 7R
VFR800 then a 900rr you are correct

So who started the tree meeting place? Do they still meet there on sundays?
I used to meet there years ago. I used to ride an kaw zx7 until I came into the light and bought a R1. The best bike built bike I think. Now I ride a 05 zuma scooter. Don't laugh it gets great gas mileage!
I had a motorcycle accident last year and lost R1. I am still tall and skinny.
I need some help... Me and a couple of buddies are thinking about renting a race track and are thinking about Sebring or Robling Road but need phone numbers or web addresses. If anyone can help out let me know.

Yes it the one and only!! I heard some of you guys wanted to know who started the tree meeting thing. Well if I am correct it was Me and Kenny cause Mrs.Dot didn't like us meeting at Donaree. So me and Kenny put our heads together and asked a few other riders where a good place to meet was. Some place that was in the middle of everything. The mall parking lot was the choice and it just so happened that there was a tree and the rest is history.
I know it was Mark zx7rr who got it all started for me. Man thoses were the days...... Sound like my father and his friends a long time ago. I live in Florida now I am wheel chaired bound cause of a bad cross country skipping accident... Just joking like always.......
