anyone want to go? its in myrtle beach.
specific info here:
http://www.scsportscar.com/modules/autox/autox_flyer.php?EventID=265&EventDate=20090307
its also the first race for the 2009 South Carolina Autocross Championship...
theres only 9 races in the series, so its pretty easy to keep up with..
and you dont need a race car.. as long as its not a truck that'll flip, and it has 4 wheels, you can run it.
anyone want to come?

so, i'll just debadge the boxster part.... put 986 on it, and its suddenly a diffrent car.
as for it being an S.. i woudnt buy the non-S base model... waay too slow. the S model makes adequate power though.

i know i can do it, but i just got the car.
honestly, its ability probaby exceeds mine. it is more then high enough at the moment, i need to get some seat time back before i even worry about car mods. the current stuff is in great condition... besides, the stock shocks and brakes are better then what some of the other cars get as upgrades.
It does have Perelli P-Zeros on it right now, so if im dead last, i really dont have an excuse. lol.
I have a few times before, but never seriously..

see.. win-win!
right now im trying to see if i can find a cheap USB camera.. mount that to the rollbar, and mount the laptop behind the seat.. then record me changing a course of cones into a pile of cones stuck under a bumper.

Hammer, what is the rule with SUV's and what is considered an SUV? For instance, would a Scion XB (toyota) be considered a SUV?

Hammer, what is the rule with SUV's and what is considered an SUV? For instance, would a Scion XB (toyota) be considered a SUV?
the general ruling is that high center of gravity vehicles can not compete.... in my mind a ScionXB would be a gray area vehicle, as its basically a car.. so i searched..
according to this its not eligible..yet:
http://cms.scca.com/documents/Solo%20Rules/2008_Stock_Category_Classifications_By_Manufacture r.pdf
however, thats just a general list, hasnt been updated recently and it says its on fastrack.. i donno if that means its on the fasttrack to approval or not.
so i googled it a bit, and found this:
http://www.scsportscar.com/content/autocross/results2.php?Event=20080315&Report=fin
thats the same local chapter as the autocross we're going to, and you can see in the results, someone got to race an Scion XB in the past.... so id say you're good to go for this one. :yeah:
if nothing else, come hang out.

Hi Travis,
I'm still trying to get the guys to go Mrytle instead of Charlotte.
However, base on the rules, my car would be in the "YEAH, you're other than stock class" So, that puts me in modified.

The Scion has been autocrossed in our region a few times, so it would be OK. Now if you show up with an expedition or a denali or something like that...fuggedabowdit

Charles
Charles, your car would be in SMM (formerly known as SM2) which is the 2-seater street modified class. And it's not like your car wouldn't be competetive.
This isn't an attack on your driving skillz...but the real question would be, how good is the driver. Considering our best SMM class driver, who i co-drove his car at the nationals last year, is moving to the Pro class(as well as myself), You will have a much beter chance at being competetive in that class.
The real key to be a good autocrosser is SEAT TIME, SEAT TIME, SEAT TIME, SEAT TIME. 99% of the time, the best driver driving the worst car, can beat the worst driver driving the best car. So basically, you have to expect to be slow when first starting. I realize this is a huge Ego blow for many of the arm chair racers out there.

I should add...
The first time I ever Autocrossed, which was down at Hutchison island a few years ago....I think I was DFL (dead Fucking Last) of the entire event. The last time I went to Hutchison Island last year, I won the entire event. Think if i would have tucked my tail and never came back? I would not have won the South Carolina Region Super Stock championship the last two years, I would not have won the South Eastern United states A-Street Prepared championship last year, nor would I have been competetive enough to make an attempt at a national Championship.

And now I remember this...
This year, SCR is implementing a new Novice program. If you are new to Autocrossing, instead of signing up for your class, instead we can enter you into the Novice Introductory class. Your class letter will just be "N" and you will run against other "N" class people no matter what they are driving. Basically a run what you brung novice shootout. After three events, we then ask you sign up in your respective classes. Another thing that comes with the "N" class is that we make an effort to teach you all aspects of autocrossing and guide you in the way things work. We even have novice class instructors that can ride with you to help you figure out whatever.
I will add, even if you are a novice but feel you are too good for the novice class because you spanked that Ford Taurus that one time on the interstate on ramp, you are not required to enter the Novice class. It's there though, and i do recommend it.

it was a SHO, leaving a toll booth, and i won solely on my superior drag lauch skills....

Travis....since you are running street tires...you really should run it in the Street tire Pax class "TAS". You will find the competition closer to you and still are still technically running under "A"-stock. That way you won't have to lose to the guys with the R-compound tires.

im still a little confused by the whole Pax thing.
i know they use index numbers to make the cars "equal"... but do you have a link that explains the street tire part?
and btw, you dont have to keep reminding me.. i know im going to be DFL.. i havent even owned this car a week yet, im still getting used to it. being mid engined, and that i havent pushed it hard yet, i dont even know if she'll understeer or if she snaps over or what... it'll be a learning experience for sure. hopfully it'll be fun to watch.

Taurus SHO is just a model of the ford taurus. i think it is "Super High Output"... the first model of it is the fastest one. it was a modern, high strung V6 designed by Yamaha.. makes the car much quicker then you would think it should be. the later model uses a V8 by ford, and its slower then the previous V6. if they put that V6 into another, sportier car, it would have made a pretty badass ride.. they're still cool now, but they look very dated, and being front wheel drive with massive torque steer (unequal length axles) they arnt as cool as they could have been.

Street Tire Class
Street Tire is a PAX class open to cars of any class (except those listed below) that are participating on street tires.
Street Tire results will be determined by the 2009 PAX index.
No DOT-R compound tires are to be run in Street Tire. Tires must have a minimum tread wear rating of 140. In addition, any specific tire models listed under the current SCCA Solo Rules as ineligible for SCCA Street Touring will also be ruled ineligible for Street Tire.
Due to the fact that this is a street tire class and the PAX index accounts for the use of street tires in ST, STS, STX, and STU, these classes may not be run in Street Tire. It is recommended that competitors in these classes run in an open Street Touring class.
coolness.. i'll bring a T, and ask specifics about it when im there.

I don't know if you are gonna be DFL. We are always getting new people or have some females who run that have zero aggression. As far as your class (open AS), I'd bet a $20 that won't win, but there are other people signed up that I don't know, so they could be slow and therefore you wouldn't DFL in the class.
But, from reading the rest of this thread, I saw you checked out the rules about the Street tire Pax class and it sounds like you are making the smart move and bringing a "T" to run in it. Just make sure to tell them you are switching classes at registration.

im going to try to bring a couple chairs.. dont know if they fit in the car or not.
chalk (see if the tires are rolling over)
12v air compressor
some basic handtools.. screwdrivers, sockets, etc...

You still have to go through the registration line, so tell them you want to run in the Street Tire Pax class under "TAS".
Food & water are things I tend to not bring and many times regret not doing so...so consider something there. A chair, if you can fit, is definitely good. A quality Dial style air gauge is a good thing to have too.
Another big thing, don't be afraid to ask questions and if somebody out of the blue offers you help, consider it a kind gesture and take it. And if you stick around for fun runs, offer a better driver the oppurtunity to drive your car with you in it. It will be a learning experience...

I have to tell you this little story. A few years ago, I overheard a former coworker of mine talking about a new Porsche that he had just scored. When he got off the phone I asked him what did you get, a boxter? He gave me this grimacing look and replied, " I'm not a boxter kind of guy" I never asked what he meant by that. Btw it was a 911 that he bought.
Anyway, Travis I actually like the boxter S. Which doesn't matter, as long as you like your new ride that is all that matters. I am relieved that you didn't buy the baby blue though! Congrads on your new ride and enjoy.

i fuggin love it.
ive already figured out long ago.. any sports car thats a convertible, is a chicks car... if girls love my car, i dont consider it a bad thing.
besides, i love driving the car...
just standing around i'll meet a porsche guy that'll just start talking to me about porsches, porsche club, etc... and im finding out that in alot of ways, the boxster (and cayman) are better handling cars then the "big" ones due to the mid engine vs rear engine... and all kinds of neat stuff i didnt realise... i know they look similar, but did you know that from about the rear of the doors forward, they're all identical? like, some years the fenders/nose/light/doors are the same.. other years, they're slightly diffrent, but completely interchange.... and of course the engines are of an identical design.. so you can swap one for the other fairly easily... although with mine being an S, im going to leave it all alone for now..
anyway, the autoX was great.. i had a blast.
im still trying to figure out how to get the car to turn.. i tried doing it my way first, and i only did ok... but after asking around, i got some pointers from some people, and it really helped.. if i could have gotten another 4 runs, i think i would have dropped another full second.. maybe more.
my rear tires are almost new, but the front tires on my car were getting worn, and i figured id replace them this summer. after the first two runs, i noticed they were getting tiny hairline fractures on the edges of the treadblocks. they didnt have that when i started... so, its time for new tires right now. it should help the car turn anyway.
you guys should come out to the next one.. its Apr 18th, at the Michelin Proving Grounds... big flat asphalt.. should be lots of fun.

Travis, i thought you were going to stick around for fun runs??? After I got done handing out work assignments for group 4, I looked over and saw you guys had hauled ass.
As far as tires, keep using the ones you have and learn on them, I would consider swapping front to rear though. Once you get decent on crap tires, then it's time to move on to better ones. Crap tires teach you to be smooth...
As far as my results, i had fast raw times but unfortunately, I found myself in the rare situation of hitting a cone every run. The 2 second penalty from doing that on my second run killed any chance of a decent place in Pro class that day. Last event, I won Pro class, this event I took 2nd from last...go figure. It really pisses me off because my best run, I thought was clean, but apparently I just barely hit a cone enough to knock it out of the box.
And to Charles... Did you do all four runs? The results only have you down for three???
And about next months event. The Michelin "Black Lake" up in Laurens county is considered to be one of the best pieces of asphalt in the eastern United States to Autocross on. It's huge, which allows us to create fast and long courses. The surface is also perfect without any bumps, dips, grates, etc to worry about. This is one place an Acura NSX could shine.

I think we might do that one too. I know Gerrard is hooked now. (black NSX). That was fun. I was really worried about my front end at G3. I think I can push it harder like you said without that worry.

Travis, i thought you were going to stick around for fun runs??? After I got done handing out work assignments for group 4, I looked over and saw you guys had hauled ass.
I was going to, but I really didnt eat anything all day either, so i was starving, and i could REALLY start to feel the sun on my face.. so when they all decided that they were going, it was a hard choice, but i decided to go too.
As far as tires, keep using the ones you have and learn on them, I would consider swapping front to rear though. Once you get decent on crap tires, then it's time to move on to better ones. Crap tires teach you to be smooth...
im not going to go out and buy super sticky autoX tires, but i do need to get new front tires.. at the end of the day, there were these little cracks in the tire.. i dont know if the car came stock with these pirellis , but the front ones are several years old. im just going to get new pirelli P Zero rossos.. thats whats on it already.. might as well keep it matched. rears are in great shape.
gotta agree on the smooth part.. on one run, i decided to try 'tossing' the car like i would with my camaro... uhh... doesnt work the same way. it was by FAR my worse run. i just worked on being smoother coming off the brake into the corner.. and as i went along, i started braking deeper.. i think it likes some extra weight on the front when i turn in.. obviously not too much.. but i think it wants some more..i donno, i need to just get more seat time to work at it.
im still happy with my times.. interestingly, if i went into AS with my raw times, vs the PAX times in the tire class, i would have gotten 6th... or something like that.. i have to go recheck, i just kinda browsed through the first time.
This is one place an Acura NSX could shine.
sounds awesome. i'll see you there.
