View Full Version : Rider safety
With the new season upon us, I thought this would be a great time to brainstorm about a rider safety. My first proposal would be setting up a safety day once a month or once every two months somewhere in the Charleston area. It would need to be in a large vacant parking lot or something like that. Kenny and few of us did this several years ago and it was a great success, I thought. This would be primary for new riders that desperately need safety advice, but also it would be for us veteran riders. We can always learn something. Plus, it's a great way to get positively involved in the community and a great way to get the Cornerjunkies name out.
Charleston has such a varity of experienced riders it's unreal. With racers and just vets with years of sport bike experience we have so much to teach and maybe we can save a life or two.
Little details about the last one: We had cones set up for solemn runs. Cones were also set up for 30mph hard braking runs...this is probably the best test a new rider can learn. We had a few others but I don't remember exactly what they were. The MSF classes are general help but this would be more focused on sport bike riders. What do you guys think and would any of you be willing to help out if we did this? Also, if you have any other ideas you'd like to add, please do so.
An excellent idea. I'm in. I can already think of a few new riders that would benefit from this.

Maybe we should also go over when the oil should be change and stuff like that. I know there are some riders out there that forget about looking after their ride.

Great idea. My neighbor has Bandit 600 and she added oil to the top of the fill hole. I removed over 2 quarts.
We need to figure out what day would be best and what supplies we'll need. We shouldn't need all that much. Cones for sure which shouldn't be too hard to find and maybe a couple shade tents to keep people out of the sun. The Ice Palace sound like a great idea.
Randy, do you know who to call to reserve a spot out there? And Kenny, would you guys at Champion like to help out? It would be nice to have some local racers give advice also.
Uhhh DK got the lot... sooo i would say talk to him.

I have the wedding this weekend so if you wish to do the air filter the next weekend that will be fine Kat.
Derek must be off today, I'll call him tomorrow. Or if I have time I'll stop by the Ice Palace. Wonder if I'll find Burns learning his new ice skating jumps?
I just talked to the manager at the Ice Palace. He said our event was a go and all he asked was a notification to what date we choose. He also said he would advertise inside the Palace. Very nice guy will to help.
All we need now is to find a date. April has alot going on but I leave in May sometime. I'm sure we can fit this in on a Sunday sometime in April. I don't think it would be over a couple hours but we have the parking lot for the whole day. So, what do you all think about a date??
Just thought of a REAL problem.... we know about this site but how do we get ahold of newbies?

word of mouth, there are a lot of air force/navy guys here. there are newbies springing up from every corner, when it comes to the military. spouses, girlfriends, female friends, what ever the title, i'm sure there will be a few that want to step it up a notch. either way, i'm sure we'll have a good turnout as well as a good time.

Do you think the guy might be open to 50's in the parking lot? If so, that would make a great event, say, once a month.

I could start posting fliers at TTC every weekend that they have the MSF course. We could also roll up there on those/some of those weekends and show ourselves. I could try talking to the instructors to let them know that we'd have something to offer to complement their courses.

Well, they do have autocrossing there twice a year and some of the money they make they donate to some charity. He did ask me if we had insurance as a group and I of course I told him we did not, but that we wouldn't be going over 20 mph. He was ok with that, I guess, because the insurance subject never came back up. The 50 races would be great with a bike show, but I have no idea if he would go for it or not.

So what about the date?? 16 Apr sound good? That gives us three weeks to set this up. All we really need is cones and that shouldn't be too hard to find.
uhhh i dont have the dates handy but we have

April 16th is bad. Easter weekend, ccs race weekend at CMP, and some military folks are going to the gap.
Yeah you're right, I forgot about Easter. What's a good Sunday then? Gotta be pretty soon due my deployment for 4 months.
Why not a Saturday? We'd only need a few experienced riders, the trick would be having a bunch of newbies there...

Thanks Kat, that would be great! I'd really like Barry to be there, he's great with all the new riders, so I'll guess we'll see which weekend is best for Barry. Once the date is set I'd like to get together, with a few playing parties over dinner, and discuss all the details. Sound like a plan?

Hey was thinking about this. Here is something i have ALWAYS wanted to learn and couldnt wrap my mind around. I want to leard EXACTLY what rebound dampning and compresion does to my bike. I want to learn suspension. The other day mike {I think} said the 636 rear shock lets it drift out abit. well i want to leard why and fixes. I also want to learn what a bike does differently when the knobs are fucked with. I REALLY can only think of 2 people here who know suspension down cold {that im aware of}. thats dk and mac. So if anyone wants to sit down and explain to me how these 6 knobs on the fron of my bike work i would really appritiate it. maybe go fo a few test rides....

I have a few friends that just started riding. These are just a few ideas for you all to cover:
how to best take a corner
group riding ettiquette
gear, gear, GEAR
how to pick up your bike
turning on an incline from a dead stop
riding a passenger
general bike maintenance
Some obvious big ones:
- emergency braking
- idiot avoidance
- braking while cornering/dodging
spoting uncomforitable riders before its to late. saved my ass alot.

MIKE AND KAT
Since the two of ya'll are at TTC is there anyway you can get some info on the safty course taught at TTC. Maybe some pamplets??
I don't know how much we’ll it will take to properly go through some of this stuff or how many people will even show up. I'd like to have at least 5 exercises and maybe a couple advice sessions ( minor maintenance, like chain tightening etc.). I primary like to target the newer riders but I'd also like the experienced riders try out these exercises. We all can learn from this stuff, but I don't want it to too basic. Learning how to brake and site fixation are the two biggest problems I see. Decreasing radius corners added with site fixation and not knowing how to stop your bike quickly in an emergency could be deadly.
How about next week a few of us get together and discuss what we are and aren't going to do?
how about at shoney's?
I've got too much stuff to do Sunday.
to much for shoney's? wow... wait arnt we going there to then go to your house? im confused...

Kat was telling me about this. I am gonna be one of the newbies..lol. I would rather learn though then kill myself or anyone else. I would add that if you cover riding a passenger, maybe just briefly. If newbies need all the other info then it is wayyy too soon to ride a passenger. I know I am not going to. Just a thought cause it sounds like there will be a lot covered. I am all for doing it once a month if the guys feel like it can be pulled off.

So are we talking it will not be the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd? I guess if it is the 30th, as long as it is not at like 8 am, I can prolly make it. I am in a wedding the 29th so I def can't do that date. BTW, how long are we thinking this will be? All day? That is the impression I am getting based on all the things being covered.
Just trying to get all the details. :smilebig:
Hopefully, I should have the info out by this weekend.
Hey Guys....I am willing to help in any way I can. You just tell me what you need and I will do my best to make it happen. I am all for helping out whomever needs it when it comes to motorcycles. I may not be as race experienced as some of these guys, but I have been riding on the street since 1990 and it sounds like most of it will be your everyday riding stuff you will be going over.
After giving this some thought, I think we should have one of these safety days as soon as possible, and by that I mean as soon as we can get 4+ students (new riders or ones wanting to brush up their skills), and 2+ instructors. If that means doing it on a work day, so be it, but let's get it done. This way we can arm the riders we already know with some skills, and work out the kinks for the next, and hopefully larger event.
So, students, when can you all get together in the next few days?
Having said that, I'm available this weekend, and up to 3PM Tuesday and Thursday of this and next week. We'd need at least two instructors to pull this off.
I'm thinking this event will only last a couple hours max.
Mike, if you find some new riders and need help let me know.

pardon the aged thread resuscitation, folks-
I'm a new rider. I've been through the DoD MSF course and have ridden my bike 1600 miles in the 4 weeks I've owned it.
That said-- I'm certain I could learn a lot from this sort of thing. Please let me know when and where I need to be. PM me, email, or just reply to this thread, as I have auto-notify enabled.
I'll be on it soon as I get back in town which will be mid-Sept. And welcome to the site!!
I appreciate the welcome...
I'm just another newb- really have no interest in Deal's Gap and the like- it's not something I'd be comfortable riding yet. If ever.

SV650 is the other bike I was looking at. I actually wanted to start on a dual sport- but being my inseam is maybe 29", I was only able to touch ground on one foot, tiptoe-- didn't inspire confidence. Looked at the V-strom, but it was too expensive, so I looked at and liked the SV650, but was't going to buy till I asked the wife-- I'd just put her and the child on a plane to go see family. Then I saw the Kawa Ninja 250 for $3000 and 76MPG, and went to look at it in person-- they didn't have any, I mentioned the SV650, they showed me the silver 650r they had in stock, and the rest is history. :D
'Course, with a month's experience under my belt [did I mention I bought a motorcycle without being able to ride one, and was in fact quite scared of it?] I find the ability to only reach one leg to the ground just isn't a huge deal. So now I'm trying to talk myself out of buying the KLR650 I wanted in the first place so I can go ride in the Francis Marion forest, and boy, those Vulcan cruisers sure look comfy.....
