View Full Version : Carb problem

I went to Jeff (Surfdancer's) house saturday morning to get my carbs adjusted. He had a buddy over who seemed to know quite a bit about the r6's. He went in and discovered I already have a jet kit installed! woohoo.. ok.. now for the bad.. After adjusting the idle circuit (richened it up a little bit for easier cold starting, and 1-4k issues i was having with bogging) The main jets weren't bothered other than taking them out to see what size jets they were. Now, I am having problems at 10k rpms.. It sounds as if it's hitting rev limiter (I'm going to guess it's running too lean, and I'm worried about turning high rpms now) Just curious on if anyone would have a guess as to what this would be? Surfdancer and I think it might be a carb boot that didn't seat and it's sucking in extra air? But I know as much about carbs as I know about how women think.. So if anyone could suggest a few things to check, I would appreciate it.. As far as adjusting stuff, I'm not comfortable with it. I did take the tank, seat, and air box off to see if i could SEE anything visually wrong with it, but it's so tight in there, I couldn't see or feel if a boot was loose, and I was worried if I took the carbs off, I'd never get them back on.. lol

Thanks!

Hey, I had another thought regarding your high speed quandary...

I wonder if the vent tubes were routed incorrectly. That would throw the diaphragm and needle position off if they saw pressure at speed.

Does the high speed problem occur in all gears? That might give us a clue.

The other thing is that we tapped a whole bunch of crud off the air filter. You need a new one anyway, so come by and we'll put it in and check all the hose routings. This time take it for a proper test ride before we close up the shop...

Stuff like this is usually simple and stupid.

Like you said, we didn't adjust floats, mains, needles - heck, we didn't even take the diaphragm covers off. All we did was pull the carbs and make sure there wasn't any junk in the circuits, drill and remove the idle mixture screw covers and reset the idle mixture screws to 2 1/2 turns out.

Yep, happens in every gear.. But it doesn't do it with no load.. Only under load. So revving in neutral, it will peg out.. Hitting 10 grand while rolling down the highway, well.. you heard it for yourself :) Yeah, I want to get the K&N's, but I'm not sure how far it would throw the carbs out of whack then.. I really want them though lol. I'm hoping to get at least enough umph to roll up the front wheel in first.

I think Ken was wrong about you having a jet kit. A quick browse shows that 148's and 152's are the stock jets

If you wanna check for leaks, rev the bike up a little while on it's stand and hold at a constant rpm, and spray carb cleaner around all the intake boots and associated carb hoses. if the engine note does not change, it's in the carbs. If the note does change, you have a leak somewhere.
Good luck...hope this helps.

Yeah, I'll see what he says tomorrow about it.. Just trying to get some general ideas about what it could be. Jeff, that r6 jet kit he had only had 148's though? odd you'd buy a jet kit to knock 2 jets to 148's from 152's. Anyhow, thanks for the input Dan, I will have to try that for sure. And Jeff, heard anything from Ken lately? Are we still on for tomorrow? I'll call him this evening sometime.

I'm working tomorrow, but you can bring it by for a couple hours after supper.

I haven't heard from Ken. Did you get in touch with him?

Hmmmm...I know a thing or two about these issues...

Sounds oddly familiar too...

In other words, this was EXACTLY what my bike was doing. Turns out there is a crazy ass conglomeration of vacuum lines and a special little specific way of hooking it all up. It can NOT be altered nor bypassed. Let me know if you need any help, I would be happy to check it out for ya.

Probable cause - hose routings. And solution is near :yeah:

Well, I'm going to try for this.. Joe said he'd help me through it.. So, we're going to go for that. Hopefully this will fix it, if not, I have to get back up with Ken. Can't make it to meet him tonight. But anyhow, I'll keep you informed about how it goes.

Ok, so that didn't work. He had a good idea, but it wasn't my solution. I called Ken back.. He said he couldn't look at it till this weekend. Jeff, would you have any time for me to swing by there this afternoon so we could do a few checks on it? Spray carb cleaner around the boots, have 2 brains pondering over it? Lol. Let me know :)

np... I did the tear-down and spray down at a buddy's house.. I put my hand in where the carb boots are on the motor, from what I could feel they were all right.. I called shadetree motorsports and asked him what he thought of it.. He said to bring it by, and he'd have to take a look at it himself.. I'm completely CLUELESS what it could be.. 100%.. I checked EVERYTHING that I could get my stubby little fingers on... It could be the throttle position sensor, or hell.. I don't know..

Went to Shadetree. Derek said that he couldn't tune it until I get another filter, remember the old one was pretty much shot? Anyhow, I'm waiting for that to come in before he can do anything to the carbs and further check what the issue is. He removed the air filter, to prevent getting the little fuzzies all in the carbs, and really causing havoc. He said it seemed to him it was just a little lean and this is why it wasn't pegging out. It has picked up a little bit now, since the filter was removed, but nothing to write home to mom about. Anyhow, he said he could possibly resize the jets and do some adjusting to pretty much "make" the jet kit by resizing the jets, etc. I'll keep you posted on this. Filter should be in by next wed-fri. So hopefully next friday or saturday I can get this baby running like she needs to be. (180$ later.. I should have just left it alone.. free fix = repair bill for me lol)
