View Full Version : Tire teck.
Well folks i was doing a interesting read on jenningsgp.com and they were talking about tire spin...nooo not what your thinking about. They were talking about when your tire is mounted if you use silicone spray lube to make it go on the tire easy the tire slips on the more hp bikes. in other words the tire moves on the rim alittle. well i just got a new tire on my zx10 and i did use the spray. well guess what, my tire has turned about a 1/4 turn. thats about 1ft of rotation. now tires have marks on them to determin what is the lightest spot is so the tire will balance... so uhhh any one out there using silicone on the big bikes the word from the tire guys is soap and water and wash the soap off...

We use soap here Randy. Being that your tire turned about 1/4 of a turn. Do you think you need to get them rebalanced?

I am thinking it so I may as well say it. What were you guy's thinking? I'm not the brightest person in the world but didn't you kinda expect that? You used a lubricant on the bead of your tire. Why didn't you just use old motor oil, you would have gotten the same results. I'm suprised that the tire didn't spin more, hell you used the silicon lubricant, it should have. Light soap and water is what most people have been using for years, however I think that Mutol or someone else makes a tire mounting spray. Leon with pirelli only uses this stuff now. He says this stuff is the bomb. It drys quick, with no mess and it works well. Talk to Matt over at Champion, I'm sure he can hook you up.

I with Barry. We changed alot of tires on our bikes with just soap and water and I never seen any of the ones I help change move when we replaced them. Might as well go ahead and put some armor all on the tread so they are shiny too!

Thats what we used was the mounting lube. thats the stuff were talking about. go back to soap and water. I promise if you have had a shop mount your tires then this stuff was sprayed on them....

I find it hard to believe that it would spin at all with all the pressure on a bead. I would expect the tire to lose traction before it spun on the rim. But as with anything if it can go wrong it will.
I remember hearing from a NASCAR fan that the reason you do not see race cars with chrome wheels anymore like you did in the 80's is for the same reason. All the traction those huge racing slicks have would alow the wheel to spin inside the tire with the slick chrome surface.
So the leason from this would be no lube or chrome if you want to go fast. :wtg:

If you wanna go fast stay away from crome. That just weighs you down.

I'd be willing to bet $10,000 that there isn't any trace of silicon in the can on the left.

here's a bit more info for everyone...i'm not real sure about the whole 'wheel spinning in the tire' thing, but i DO know that i will not be using any spray--not even the tire mount spray--to mount tires that will be used at the track when people come into the shop to have them changed. the stuff is supposed to dry completely relatively quick, however in the area right where the tire meets the rim the spray 'pools', and when you get out on the track it will sling from centrifical force and end up on your tire tread, causing a slick spot. i always knew that there was a little residue from the spray that ended up on the side of the tires, but when jason and i went to jennings a few weeks ago we discovered it on both my tires on the left hand side, and they were both a bit slick. oddly enough, every set of tires i ever mount are mounted with the left side of the wheel down, and this is the side where i would spray the tire mount lube. for any disbelievers, i will be happy to let you spray the tire mount lube on your tires to make them easier to mount, but if you need proof of this, watch the roebling video where i crashed in turn 3...on the left side of the tire that i was complaining was slippery all day. coincidence?? i think not... i was always careful to use the spray lightly, but now i will never use it again as it made me crash. if anyone needs more of a hint, the can says 'tire mount LUBE'...
yea i heard you should use soap and water then wash the rim.

Mac I disagree that tire mount lube made you wreck. You ran your bike for half the day at least. If it didn't come off or dry by then, there is a serious problem, you probably grabbed the can on the right. After a couple of laps any overspray from any lubricant should have been off of your tire. Now if that's what you guy's need to make you more sure of yourself's then by all means don't use tire mount lube. In that case, everyone that gets there tires mounted by the pirelli guy Leon should wreck. That's a lot of people, including me. Everytime I wreck I can give you the reason, and tire mount spray ain't the cause. 100% of the time it's been because I screwed up in some way form or fashion. Well one time I crashed when it wasn't my fault. Several years back we took a trip to deals gap. I passed DK like he was standing still, so he got mad and took me out in a corner. When you see him ask him what's up with that. BTW he might have a different version of the story, buy hey, who ya going to believe. :evillaugh:

i thought about the tire mount lube after i first crashed, but disregarded it becuase i've used it so many times. but if you ask a bunch of people at the track that day BEFORE i crashed, i said numerous times that the left side of my rear tire felt like there was something slippery on it when i was on the gas in turn 3 and 5, so i couldn't be on the gas too hard in that turn. 2 weeks ago, jason and i were at jennings doing a track day, and we both saw the tire mount lube on the left sidewall of my front AND rear tire as well as the edge of my tread, where it was slippery. it took a few sessions of riding carefully, but i got the slick spot burned off, and didn't have a problem the rest of the day. until i burned it off, the first few sessions that weekend felt like the front end was nervous in left turns, and the rear wanted to spin coming out of turn 1 (and a few other left turns where i was leaned over all the way...). after feeling the tires at jennings, i know its not just in my head. maybe when the stuff dries, its fine, but when i can visually see the stuff slinging from the tire bead and its slippery, i can't help but think that had SOMETHING to do with it in addition to me screwing up. still just my opinion, though...
