Hey everyone, as most of you have heard there have been 3 bikes that were stolen this week that we know about. For SC to be such a small state. A lot of bikes sure do get stolen here. SC is # 11 on the states with the higest bike thefts. With only a 3% recovery rate. We need to protect what we have. The bikes that were stolen this week all came from the Mt. P area. What can we do to keep our bikes from getting stolen? Like Randy said in another post, you don't know how many times that I have heard. I left my bike parked at the apt. and came out and it was gone. Or I was parked at the mall and when I came out my bike was gone. What kind of info can you guy's and girl's pass on to help prevent this from happening to others. I know that there are quite a few people here that have there bikes, scooters, pocket bikes, and trailers stolen. Please when you get a chance, post some tips here on how we can prevent our stuff from getting stolen. Here are a few things that I can think of.
1. Most bike thefts in Charleston seem to occur in Mt. P and N. Chas. areas.
2. Almost all of the thefts occur from apts.
3. Thefts seem to like power. If you have a liter bike, watch out.
4. Never ever, ever, ever park your bike in your apt. complex. Sooner or later your bike WILL get stolen.
5. GET Full coverage insurance or be prepared to take a 100% lost when your bike is stolen.
6. Chain, lock and mark your trailers. Try to park your trailers in a place that it would be very difficult to steal it. Like behind a parked car, etc. Remember keep it out of site if at all possible.

Trailers
Trailers are most of the time around 1500 to some times 10k you can go to home depot and buy a gorila lock for the toung witch is $40 i have 3 trailers and 2 sit in front of my house. with 2 trailers being stolen in my neiborhood i am happy to report that these toung locks have helped me with 0 theft! so the $120 i have spent has help keep my trailers safe.
Bikes
Ebay has a bike alarm for $35 + $10 s&h =$45 I install these alarms for $100. thats $145 witch is 1/2 the cost of your pc3.
So you heard bike alarms dont work TRUE!!!! you cant depend on 1 item. I inform people that you should have 3 lines of defence. which ever you choose. 1 bike alarm. 2 disk lock. 3 keep in in a garage. And you can replace any of those with others. Cycle gear sells AND STOCKS a gorila chain. So can the bike STILL be stolen yes! but it is just easier for the bike thiefs to go somewhere else. The best deterant is the guy that refuses to do nothing to park next to you. YOUR BIKE WILL STILL BE THERE!
As for those of you that say bike alarms dont work.... I have installed 3 here in town and i KNOW those bikes are still with there owners.
Last
Dont brag about your theft deterants. Braging is like giving out theft blueprints. dont show off your alarm. let people know it's there then shut up!

Will Your Motorcycle Be Stolen ? Or Crash ? Find Out!
Categories: Statistics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the largest USA based insurance companies, The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies, has taken some time off and studied all the motorcycle claims they have received over the last 3 years. It must have taken quite some time, since there were 2,000,000 claims !!
But from these figures, they were able to determine which motorcycles were most likely to be stolen, and which were least likely to disappear:
Motorcycle Thefts : Most Likely to be Stolen Least Likely to be Stolen
1. Suzuki GSX-R Series
2. Yamaha YZF Series
3. Honda CBR Series
4. Suzuki Hayabusa
5. Kawasaki Ninja Series 1. Suzuki Savage
2. BMW R1200C
3. Honda Rebel Series
4. Honda Shadow Series
5. Yamaha V-Star
Funny actually.... the motorcycle most likely to have a new "owner" are all Japanese sportsbikes, while the motorcycle nobody wants to steal are all cruiser/custom motorcycle (even the BMW R1200C which is beautiful in my eyes).
Motorcycle Crashes: Most Likely to be Crashed Least Likely to be Crashed
1. Suzuki GSX-R Series
2. Kawasaki Ninja Series
3. Suzuki TLR
4. Yamaha YZF Series
5. Honda CBR Series 1. Yamaha Virago Series
2. Honda Rebel Series
3. Suzuki Savage
4. Harley-Davidson FXR
5. BMW R1200C
No surprise here ! The usual list of suspects ! Japanese sportsbikes are more likely to crash, while cruisers are least likely.
So.... you don't need to be a rocket scientist to realize that if you're going to buy a Suzuki GSX-R motorcycle, you stand a very good chance of either losing it to theft or accident, but you'll be 100% sure that you'll be paying through the nose to insure the precious motorcycle. On the other hand, if you buy a Honda Rebel, the insurance company might even give you money....

i am sure that if you compare which bikes are stolen the most it will go along with which ones are sold the most for example if there are more suzukis then there will be more suzuki thefts

OnStar helps deputies chase down stolen truck
Wednesday, December 13, 2006
BY NOAH HAGLUND
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office credits General Motors' OnStar navigation system with helping deputies successfully follow a stolen pickup during a high-speed chase through West Ashley Monday morning.
A dispatcher sent out a bulletin at 10:15 a.m. for a 2007 GMC pickup stolen out of North Charleston half an hour earlier. Soon afterward, an OnStar operator called to tell sheriff's dispatchers the truck was on S.C. Highway 61 near Bees Ferry Road. A deputy headed that way.
"Sure enough, the car was there," sheriff's spokesman Capt. John Clark said.
The deputy, eventually joined by fellow officers, chased the truck at speeds up to 80 mph on Main Road and U.S. Highway
17, where the truck went a short distance on the wrong side of the highway.
"OnStar actually helped us maintain the track of the car through the entire chase," Clark said.
The pursuit ended after the driver turned left into the Ponderosa subdivision and was blocked in.
Deputies arrested Billy Scott Osborne, 27, of Hanahan, on charges of possessing a stolen motor vehicle, failing to stop for blue lights and sirens, resisting arrest and four Charleston County bench warrants.
This wasn't the first time local police have attributed success tracking a stolen car to GM's navigation system.
In August, an OnStar operator tracked a Chevrolet Suburban carjacked in Mount Pleasant to McClellanville. Police from several agencies pursued it to Georgetown, where the men inside it bailed out and were arrested.
OnStar is a security, communications and diagnostics system offered on GM vehicles since 1996. It boasts 4.5 million active subscribers in North America.
Through the first half of this year, the GM subsidiary claimed to have pinpointed an average of 400 stolen vehicle locations per month.
Other products, such as LoJack, also act as homing devices to track stolen vehicles.

That's a great story Kat, but I would like to see a story like that about a motorcycle. I never really worry about my car getting stolen, but with my motorcycles I really feel like it's just a matter of time. The bike thefts here in Charleston are so high that’s it's really amazing, that such a small city could have this many thefts. I'd just like to hear one story of what any local police have done, to curtail the bike thefts, just one. I believe that even the thieves around here know that they have almost free reign when it comes to bike thefts. Just one, anybody?
ok bary i'll bite.
In 2001 my bike was stolen from in front of my parents house. the bike 2 months later was spotted on I-26. my girlfriend {on the back of my zx7} called the cops. we were told by charleston county "stop chasing him we will not come to you untill you stop!" i make this sound exiting but the guy didnt know we were there. so like 50mph top speed. well we stopped and the cops took a report....yea no good. Well someof you may recall a night i flipped out at hooters because a bike was there and it WAS mine. the cops asked me if i had the title on me...come on man! the cops took down the guys name and address. they also "wrote" down the vin number. they let him leave. the next morning i called the cops. a vin number is 17 digits. I started out and before i got 5 digits out i was told i was wrong....WTF?!?!? ok as you read this remember that first 5 digits were wrong....ok lets move on.
So a couple of years later the heritage dragrace is coming up so i go to cycle world to get a new chain.... guess whats in the bay? you got it. my zx6r. SOB!!!! I cept my cool and drove strait out to moncks corner. got title key pics bla bla bla. On the way back i call N.chas they sent out 2 cops. as they are there they said the VIN had not been tampered with....BS the vin had been sanded and double stamped. At this point i whip out my zx7 and allow the cops to view the vin. THEN they said "oh yea it has been tampered with. FUCKING DUH! So now im curious and i go look at the zx6's vin....the last 3 numbers had been altered!...remember what the cop told me earlier????? the first 4 were the same! he just didnt want to even look it up! lazy fucker! so the cops debated as to what to do as the thief was raising hell and were going to allow him to take it. then i spoke up and said "isnt it ellegal to operate a vehical with a altered vin? and doesnt that mean you have to impound the bike?" THEN the cops were like yeaaaaa your right. so they impound my shit to launch a investigation. well that day as there looking into it the thief is getting all buddy buddy with me. "yo dog i just saw a good deal back in 99 it was a zx6r for 3k!" I responded with "yea and hell it doesnt even need keys!" {being a smartass} well here's where it gets deap! later i found out the ties he was saposed to have cycle world put on....{wait for it} WERE STOLEN OFF THE UPS TRUCK HE DRIVES! where were the tires going? TO CYCLE WORLD! {this is why i say dont give up hope chris...day aint smart!} well the cops were going to fry him with federal offence of mail theft....yea you read that right. and return my bike...then he lawyered up and here's the good news..... he rides with us today! N.chas police did NOT arrest him.....
bump to the top just to remind everyone of what is a week away.
