I've been PUMPED about doing my first track day. I'm doing the school with Team Promotion until about 1 then the rest of the day is spent on the track. So I've been telling everyone and getting help with stuff that I'm not sure of. Like pointers about the VIR north course...what sections to look out for, etc.
Anyway, I mentioned it to two certain people and what do you know...They said they want to "sponsor" me. Now I don't know JACK about how sponsorships work. With my first one I'm getting a free leather suit. Then the sponsor I got last night is giving me free tools and a tool box.
Anyone know how sponsorships work? I need some help.
I know I'm not fast...and I KNOW I've got a LOT to learn about being on the track. But I'm dying to get out there and these people are just helping me and advertising in the meantime.
Now I just need a steering damper

sometimes things like that just drop in your lap. come to the track day this monday and i'll show how to handle all that stuff. usually they just want to advertise, but i'll show you how to get things like trailers, tires, gear, GAS MONEY!! PLUS , since you have leathers now you should be able to make the track day!!!

I don't have my leathers yet. I'm still trying to figure out which one I want.
I've narrowed it down to these two:

I already have a trailer. 6x12' enclosed solid white.
I'm still on my stock tires. You think I should get some new ones before the track day in October?

good god, yes!! street tires=nasty crash in corner!! if you can find someone that races, you can buy a good set of DOT race take-offs (aka used tires) for about $75. if you can't find anyone that has them, there are a bunch of us on this forum that have PLENTY, so i'm sure one of us could hook you up. if you don't out-ride your street tires on the track, the should hold up fine, but its sooooo not worth the risk of crashing.

how much do they usually go for?
You'll have a much better time on race rubber.

for my first track day I dont think i'm gonna need race tires. i mean look at how hard some people ride on the street. i'm slow anyway :) I'm gonna take it easy because I dont even have track plastics. :( I'm gonna go out there with my street plastics and just play it safe. I won't be riding hard on my first day ya know

I agree with you Kristin. I made my first 3 or 4 trips to the track on good street tires. I even took the ED Bargy race school on street tires. I really don't think that to many newbies are at a level of requiring race tires. I know that Steve and Brad did the samething. I see people at Jennings all the time with street tires. I think that you will know when you riding skills have surpassed the street tires. There have been several magazine articles about this. It has been proven that many of the good street tires are good for doing track days. Some of the tires that I can remember were the pilot powers race, H2's, bt014, bt012ss, and M1's. There are really too many good street tires to list. I think just about every major tire vendor produces at least one good street tire. Do show up with a good fresh set of tires, not the one that have been on your bike for the past 4 months or so. If you wreck I'd be willing to bet that it wont be because of your tires. Murphy's law, you are always at risk of wrecking, be prepared if you do. So take as much stuff off you bike as you can, esp. the high dollar stuff such as the headlight assy.

wouldn't i risk hurting more shit with them off? sure i'd save my plastics but wouldn't it be even worse if i wrecked without plastics?
I hope that came out right. i'm a bit sleepy :)

Take it from someone who's never been down, the more stuff you can take off, the better off you are.

Let me tell you bout a little guy named sweet "p" that went to the track with street tires long story short he broke every bone in his wrist, got four pins in his arm, a thing that looked like an erector set, listen to kenny tell you "I TOLD YOU SOOOOOOO" priceless

I've never ridden on any other tires BUT street tires.
I bet it will be VERY different than my street tires. They say on take offs when you lean, it grabs and you lean hardcore....kinda like it just falls. Is that true?
Sorry for all the dumb questions but I figure the more questions I ask...the better off I am when the time comes.

Get your self some GP tires or Slicks. It will be worth having the better tires. Sticky is better. DO NOT USE STREET TIRE!! It may work for some people, but it is best to play it safe and get the better shit.

Because of the race tire's 'pointy' profile, it will tend to dive into corners a bit more quickly but nothing that would alarm you. Once you take a few corners, you won't even notice it. Besides that, the tire will feel the same as a street tire except for being much more sticky.

I lost count of how many times i've seen someone at the track hauling ass on there new street bike and raving about the awsome deal they got and how good they are on their high performance street tires. And then see them drive away with their pretty bike all F*#@ed up on the trailer. :wall:
Even if you don't think your fast enough for the more exspensive race tires you will never know until its too late. Its not worth taking the chance. Just listen too Sweet P.

My boyfriend keeps telling me NO that I need to keep with my street tires. That the race tires take a bit longer to heat up than my street tires and that it won't be worth it in the long run.
I wish I could ride with race tires before going to the track...just to see how they feel ya know?
My boyfriend says that if it gets to the point where my street tires start melting on the track, then I need to change to the take offs.
I believe you guys...so don't think I'm doubting all of you. I just wish I knew what to do.

Oh by the way , I'm doing the CLASS with Team Promotion. Anyone got good/bad things to say about them?
I may sound like a fruitcake for asking this but...are there any good books/DVDs/websites I can visit to better educate myself about riding on the track?
I ordered the 2004 Road Race DVD from www.roadracedvd.com and it should be here sometime next week.
I don't know about Team Promotino but if they are anything like Ed Bargy you shouldn't need to better educate yourself, they will teach you what you need to know in the classroom.
About your boyfriend, I think he is wrong. There is no better insurance, while at the track, than a good set of tires, plain and simple. You are hearing race track experiences from serveral full time racing folks here and they are giving good sound advice.

That the race tires take a bit longer to heat up than my street tires and that it won't be worth it in the long run.
Thats true to a certain exstint. Dunlops race tires heat up pretty quick. And if you are only doing track days whats the rush. Do one or two slow laps to let the tires heat up and then let it rip. A licensed racer can get you Dunlop 208gp American race tires for $249 a set. Thats their entry level tire. THe better rubber is $100+ more.
I don't know how much race experiance you our your boyfriend have. I'm just telling you what I have learned from 2 1/2 years of racing and trackdays. Listen too who ever you want. :twocents:

if the tires heating up is the issue, borrow a set of tire warmers from someone. they are definitely worth their weight in gold. they get your tires up to (or close to) operating temps so you can just go out and pretty much haul ass. they will also extend the life of your tires while you're at the track. problem solved :wtg:

Okay so what's the best new tire I should get for the track?
the_MAC
07-30-2005, 03:45 AM
that is really a matter of personal preference...i would say that dunlops or pirellis would be a good place to start. both are fairly predictable and confidence inspiring, and once you ride on both you'll be able to decide for yourself which ou like best based on your riding style.
I'd say the dunlops, they are cheaper.

the most important thing is let the tires warm up something that i knew but yet still neglected to do on my last session of the day during the carolina gp jam ........................................needless to say i lowsided

Yea shitbag. You lowsided my bike and have yet to come fix anything on it. Take his advice if you don't have tire warmers and take at least lap and half to get them warm before hauling ass.

Hey Kristin, I was checking out the R6 forum and see you are still looking for a way to mount your passenger pegs. Anyway I have the adapter from when I bought my high mount, but I don't ride anyone. If you want it I can send it to you if you just send me some money back for shipping. Let me know.

If you can do that, great.
If not...I'm going to bug Shane (ccs) and pay him a few $ to do it for me. He's in Rock Hill right now which isn't too far from me. So I'll just strap a backpack on and ride down there if he has the time.
